Do you have one? If so, what kind and the reason you like that certain model.
is it a Mini dvd or normal dvd.

I'm wanting to get one, but have no clue on what is a good one to get.

Gracias!!

It's a mini DVD from what I understand.

Just be aware that recording directly to a DVD gives you no editing possibilities. DVD recorders are for people who really don't care to get into editing AT ALL! Even if you aren't planning to edit now but would like to archive the footage for a later date for someone else to edit you will have to deal with many problems, not the least of which is the lesser quality due to the compression that it uses.

With the direct to DVD recorders you are stuck with your footage exactly the way you shot it. For someone who only wants to use it to maybe shoot a practice posing routine and INSTANTLY pop it into a TV to watch and evaluate it, then maybe it would be a good idea but, as you can imagine, I usually advise against them.

So your saying they aren't really that great then and that I would be better off keeping my regular camcorder.

Hmm..now to only find a power cord charger for that thing. My son lost it.

What are you trying to shoot with it? Is it an older model? Does it use mini DV tapes?

Just kidding!!!
Want to shoot some of my training with it.
It's a Canon ES60. Takes the smaller tapes.

LOL! If it was porn I'd say you need to hire a good videographer! (Me!)

If you don't mind me asking, what are you going to do with the training footage?

Probably store it like all the images I have and let them collect dust..

Awwww, you shouldn't let that happen! There are many creative things you can do with well shot footage like that.

The reason I ask is because if you wanted the video to look better or maybe wanted to someday edit it down to something that you and your kids or grandkids would want to watch in years to come without having to fast forward over the "boring parts" then I would suggest you check out my various columns over in the MD TV Community Channel.

I have been developing many threads to help people like you shoot better video. I would suggest you start with this one...

...and go on from there if you are interested.

Thanks,
Mike

Instead of a DVD camcorder, Jodie, maybe you should consider a hard disk camcorder. Instead of a disk or tape, these allow you to record your footage onto a multi-gigabyte hard drive built directly into the camcorder, similar to a DVR player.

They are great but the issue then becomes storage. If Jodie is going to be shooting footage periodically and putting it away for later use it is much easier to throw a mimi DV tape in a box than have to download, keep track of and archive DV footage on a computer or external hard drive indefinitely.

This is correct. People are in way too much a hurry to leave behind the DV / HDV formats, but in my opinion, it remains the best option in consumer and prosumer technology.

Right. That's why one needs to define the purpose of the videocamera before deciding on the format in which it records.

The mini DVD camcorders are probably great if you just want to shoot something and watch it right away on your TV, or to have something to send to grandma so she can see that birthday party.

When I was shopping for my current camera, mini DV tape models were already getting scarcer, and I think that trend will continue for consumer cameras.

For people who just want to have fun and share stuff online, the Flip looks like a good choice.

Cheap, easy to carry, easy to use. The "action mount" alone offers some interesting possibilities.

You can find a new power cord in Ebay. I broke my old laptop's power cord 3 years ago and found a replacement there. Very inexpensive price too.

I checked out The Flip. Think I'll get one soon and give it a whirl. Looks easy enough for even me to use.

That does look pretty cool. Tom...can you do video of the stage with it?

The Flip only has 2x digital zoom, you'd have to be VERY close to get a decent stage image.

If you are comparing camcorders and zoom is important, ignore the digital zoom and just look at optical zoom specs.
