Hey Guys!!!!
I am a new member and would like some advise/comments...I am getting ready for June 7th and would like to know if there is a specific look the judges are looking for. I am at just about every show in NYC and I still can't figure it out. I competed 4 yrs ago and this is bascially a come back for me.
If you have any comments pls. let me know. Thanks!!!!!
How long should I try? Until.

Hi SuperGal 34! Welcome to the board :waving: and welcome back to the "competing" world. I copied below what was posted on another thread. Though it's about NJ shows, they're all working on the same judging criteria. Hope this helps. I'm sure you'll get more feedback and a lot of support from us! A bunch of us will be at the show! You should start a journal here too!!

they discussed the usual stuff...and how NJ is known to like the "harder" look. well this is coming to an end this year according to Pat Grecco who is in charge of the NJ NPC.
he said that they have been instructed to go for a "softer" but muscle toned look. he compared it to an "athletic" look wothout striations or muscle separation...
so we will see what happens...but in the past NJ has been known to go for the harder looks...they said they are getting away from that this yr. b/ it is detering girls from competing here and the number of competitors last yr were low.
^^^^^^^
What she said. Ideal "look" would be what you would picture a track athlete to look like, athletic looking, muscle, but NOT separated/striated. They are aware of the perception of NJ rewarding "harder" girls, but they have to conform to what the powers that be have handed down.
Class A at the Mets came up in convo as I affirmed the perception that girls were told should compete in NJ if they are "harder". This is something they do not want.
But the proof will be in the pudding, we will see what happens. I think the most important thing to realize is what the "general" look of a class of girls is on show day. If most of the girls on stage look a little softer and there is one HARD girl, yeah she may look the best to the crowd, but the judges won't reward it. If MOST of the girls show up hard, well then they will most likely place harder girls. It is more a function of the body types who show up and being judged in RELATION to them.
So my take on the whole thing. Come in looking YOUR best and let the chips fall where they may. I always have told Shelly from day 1 that you can't worry about what the judges are thinking or looking for b/c you'll go crazy. Just come in at 100% of YOU.

figure? fitness? bb?
figure; lightly weight trained physique, nice lines, good colored tan, good posing and presentation onstage, good "face", the whole overall package. I can tell you that for myself, the way I personally judge has not changed very much, other than looking for fine details now vs years ago...
I did not judge NY weeks ago, so I have no opinion, Ive never judged in NJ, so no opinion there (the 2 topics discussed here lately).... I do judge national level though (nationals, usa, etc), so if anyone here wants me to give ideas, critique, feedback, on a case by case basis on what I feel a particular physique may need, that I am more than happy to help anyone with :)

Hi Dave -
This is my 4th year competing in the NPC - I have done shows in NJ, NY, PA, OH, and GA and have seen a wide disparity in the judging criteria. But I have heard about the "new criteria" and I am happy there will be consistency.
Anyway, I am going to do the Jr Nationals this year - my first year at a national show - my concern is that while I do have an athletic physique (I was a college track athlete and I still run a lot) I am not really that muscular - no striations in my legs or shoulders - is the judging criteria at the national level moving towards a more athletic softer look? Thanks for the info and appreciate your comments!

Sandy and Jim (Rockell) made it a point to further emphasize last year what we are looking for and you can see it in alot of the competition results. "Soft", "Hard", are terms relative in part to whom they are being used on, and in part to the person applying those terms, and that person's experiance. What is hard to you, might not be hard to me.
I think overall, we should think; less muscle/hardness than bodybuilding, a little more than bikini competition like say Hawaiian Tropic, so probably closer to what youre telling me that you in particular have...
with that being said though, physique competition is still more than just hard/soft. We're looking for balance, symmetry (a term rarely used correctly), posing, tanning, the whole package, in addition to a great body. Also partially think "does this person "sell products?"" Can you see this person in a magazine ad?
The thing with figure, is that while there is a set criteria, there are so many competitors coming thru with so many varying physiques that the results class to class may vary in the judges attempt to determine placings according to criteria. While I think it can be controlled, I do not beleive this will ever be solved. Figure has too many variable in different physiques to get it 100% the same every class, every show, across the US. But, very recognizable is the question "ok, Dave, so how do I train for the competition then?"
the cliche statement and Ive said it a million times myself, "be the best you that you can be".
so, with that being said, lets go one step further to make everyone the best them that they can be, and on a case by case basis, I am happy to offer anyone suggestions as to what I feel would improve their overall look/package... and trust me, I actually do this for a living, one trainer with over 600 (yes, 600) competitive clients sends all of their girls to me, so Ive got a pretty good eye as to what we want... :) :)

hi! I like muscle. We just need to judge it accordingly to whats presented on stage, and relative to which discipline Im judging (bb, fit, fig) ;)
now...NY I do judge...Ive judged the Mets, I annually judge the Atlantic States, the Eastern USA, I head judged the Kim Klein show last year w/ Linda Wood Hoyte... I just didnt judge the Met this year so I have no comment. In regards to someones comments of "politics"; nope. I know the panel. I was there, but if Im not judging, I honestly dont pay attention, and NJ is a long drive for me to make so Im unable to go there, although Im friendly with people like Jess Rohm down there and I think collectively theyre working to make it all good :)

It's still somewhat all confusing. I think I'm gettin' it that hard and muscular is not what will be rewarded most likely. I guess we'll see in future competitions what the trend is. I'm looking forward to the Pittsburgh Pro to see what the outcome will be.

it is. muscular and hard not rewarded, but its more "national level hard". I know what I mean by this because I judge it, but its just difficult to explain w/o us actually being at a show and me explaining it to everyone...
please remember that Pittsburgh is a professional competition, while everything will trickle down, it really is different than what is being discussed here, which is amateur physique competiton...

last year Margo had a booth, while Maggie judged the teenage fitness there.. I dont think shell have a booth this year, although Im sure Mags will be there (not sure yet)...alot of times shes working the event, last years nationals in dallas, for example, she worked with ProTan, I beleive shes expediting Jr Nationals and USAs so far, as part of Steve Stones crew...
