YOU have to pay to renew it every so many years.... YES its true... you are awarded it and then have to pay to keep it.

My question would be...why do you want a pro card so badly?
Once earned...what is your goal to do with that "PRO" title afterwards?
These are questions I was discussing with a friend just the other night...

good question! get to the olympia, i guess! isn't that everyone's goal who wants to turn pro! just to get recognition! but you are right, why do we want it soooo bad???

I'm not sure why others want it so badly, I can only speech for myself since I've also had this discussion before. My reason is to say that I've achieved my goal of pro status nothing more. I know that I'm not going to retire with a pro card but ultimately when I compete I compete towards something and for me it's that pro card.

Very valid points Jodie. I think once a person earns a pro card they should definitely use it to make further contributions in the sport for one.

SC, this is SUCH a funny thread!! :D
Ross and I wondered the EXACT same thing when I won my Pro Card...was it an actual "card"?! Well yes it is, and YES I carry it in my wallet with me LOL!!:waving:
For those of you wondering "why" you'd want an IFBB Pro Card....I will tell you there are LOTS of reasons for me:
First and foremost, the Pro girls that you will get to compete with are AWESOME! Super supportive, zero 'attitudes', super fun to compete with and some of the BEST friends I have ever made. Just for that it's worth it!
Of course there is the opportunity to compete at the Olympia and the Arnold, THE greatest competitions on the planet! (I'll get there someday hopefully......!!)
As well, IFBB status is highly respected because it is NOT easy to obtain, and when you're an IFBB Pro, people realize that you busted your you know what to get it!
You Ladies still with your eyes set on a Pro Card, I say GO FOR IT! If I can do it, YOU can do it!!!

The Pro Card simply represents an accomplishment for me...a goal to work towards.
I always laugh and say that if I ever get a Pro Card, I better cherish the win that gives it to me because it'll be the last one! :p

Understandable to do as a goal.
BUT....when we get out in the mainstream public where people may not know what we do about the IFBB/NPC do they really know what that Pro status is or means? Better yet, how much dedication and determination it takes to reach our desired goals?
With me, I'm not after it. Have one in the NGA which I do not compete in for pretty clear reasons and it would not be ethical for me to do so. But I did do one show as a Pro there....after that one show, had a girl come up to me and say.."you are the ones we aspire to be like, the ones that make our drive to reach that goal so strong". Having had her say this to me really put me in a place that I wanted to give back to what others were trying to reach. Honestly very humbling as well as I never see myself the way they did.
So I guess my question is still....what do you do with the Pro title besides have that drive and desire to be on that Olympic or Arnold stage?

Great thread! I used to wonder about this too until I saw one for the first time. The card itself is pretty low-key after all the hard work that goes into getting one. They don't even laminate it! Pretty cool to have one though - even more exclusive than a black AmEx card!

I think "Pro Status" in the IFBB is just to be among the best of the best...this is to take NOTHING away from any other organization, as there are many that are respectable and competitive BUT the satisfaction of getting your pro card with them is not the same - at least in my experience it wasn't... I'm always looking for the next goal as most competitors are and IFBB IS IT! We all compete to win and to achieve recognition for our hard work and PRO status gives us that all time recognition. And for many it may open other opportunities as well even if its just more credibility when offering help or as a role model to others in the sport or who want to get fit in general.
Sad truth is many will never turn pro and even if I am one of those who never does I'm happy improving and going forward as if I will! This particular competitor's pro card is more impressive to me because if you look at her history its crazy how long she has been competing HARDCORE!! Her resiliency and determination is inspiring to all of us looking to achieve the coveted PRO CARD! She is involved so much in the sport, it is her LIFE... and although she has already done well on a pro stage and I'm sure will continue to her HEART is in the sport, with or without "pro status".

maybe you all think im nutzo....but i honestly dont compete in hopes of getting a pro card. I mean... yeah its the "ultimate goal" for most...but for me.. i just want to be the best ME that i can be..every year improving on MY physique, and enjoying the journey along the way.
IMHO- too many girls focus solely on that lil piece of paper..and dont enjoy the route to the stage...and the ups and downs. competing has made me a better person in and out of the gym...and it keeps me looking forward always striving to be better in all aspects of my life...
i never even really contemplate "pro status"...i feel like there is so much more to competing than JUST THAT.
and in reality...out of all the girls on that stage...only 1 (or 2) are getting that status per class... the odds are most likely against you. (sorry to burst anyones bubbles lol) so you have to have more than that driving you every single day...me, its the luv of the sport in general. everything else is just secondary...

So I guess my question is still....what do you do with the Pro title besides have that drive and desire to be on that Olympic or Arnold stage?
Not sure if this question was directed to me or not, but...I'll give my answer anyway!
You can check out my thread that SC did for me, it pretty much gives details of what I do in the industry.
To sum it up:
I have been training girls to compete for over 8 years, have had 66 different women hit the stage, and one girl who turned Pro last year.
I have also been giving group seminars and workshops on how to compete for the same amount of time, refining it over the years.
I started promoting my own show four years ago and this year in addition to that show we are also promoting the Canadian Figure and Fitness Championships where the Canadian girls get their IFBB Pro Cards!
I also volunteer as the President of the British Columbia Amateur Bodybuilding Association and have done so for four years now (like NPC). For free, in my spare time, I oversee over 300 bodybuilding, fitness and figure members, three novice shows, one provincial show and two national level shows.
I'm sure you could do all these things without being an IFBB Pro, but it sure helps! It's how I make my living (by training competitors, seminars etc) and the Pro Status and show coverage of those events gives my clients all the confidence they need to to know that I know what I am talkin' about!! It also brings in supporters and sponsors of the events that we promote.
Without the Pro status I don't think I would be able to have the time to do all the Volunteer work that I do for the association either.
Like I said, if I can do it, anyone can do, so don't let anything hold you back from your dreams!!

I personal trained before I had my twins and helped with posing seminars for some natural federations... this is the ultimate goal and SO rewarding even more so than WINNING! Like Maggie she makes suits, helps girls and runs a bazillion NPC shows! Girls who use their status for GOOD! :respect::awesome:

Oh gosh no it wasn't directed at you. Its just a general question on what people's goals are once they get the card or as to why they want one so badly.
We all know you do so much within the industry, to me you are doing what I think most should do by giving back and helping others reach their goals in whatever chosen field it may be.
Maybe this needs to be a complete separate thread as to not take away from the main thread.

I asked Kristin Nunn how you go about getting your pro card once you are eligible..............
You mail a letter requesting it and then they send you an application. After you fill it out you return it with some moo-lah and ta-da! Pro card!

LOL, I've always wondered what they looked like too.
For some reason though I was imagining it looking like something more along the lines of a "Golden Ticket" like in Willy Wonka!
Heh...my library card is fancier than that! Kinda ironic that it's so plain considering how much it stands for. Thanks for sharing the secret!!

I thought "Pro Card" was somehting they used to give out back in the day and not any more but the term stuck. I never really thought they actually give you all one. When you show up to shows like the O or Arnold do you have to show it to get in? LoL
Do you have to actually get the card? I would think they have your name on some data base some where.
When I say this one I was a little disappointed. I would think if they gave you a card at least they could make it look more official. Maybe almost like a real ID. Put your pic on it and the show you turned pro on it too.
I know what it look likes means little to you ladies, b/c you not what it cost to get there and it will always be beautiful.
...It just lookes like something Joe wrote on a sticky note...

To get my card I had to call the IFBB office and they sent me the application via email and the contract and of course I sent those items in along with my dues. A couple of days later I had my card.
I know to some our IFBB Professional card may not seem as much as it doesn't have our photo, etc. But to a lot of us it means a lot as it is something we worked very hard for. I don't need anything fancy showing that I am a pro, thats just me. Its a real honor to be a part of the IFBB:respect:

Know that I see the front it looks a lot better.
Just seeing the back it looked so cheap.
But do you need to actually carry it around to shows and such?
I know many of you do b/c you worked so hard for it but if you go to compete and you don't have it will they say you can't compete?
Just curious
