View Full Version : Who should cross over to FBB?

I know it's an exciting time when a fitness/figure competitor crosses over to bodybuilding and never looks back. So I'd thought I'd start a thread asking this: Who do you want to see cross over to bodybuilding? Or better yet...who SHOULD cross over?
Someone I think would make a good crossover is Shannon Meteraud. She carries a lot of mature muscle on her, and I'd think she could easily be a lighweight or middleweight bodybuilder in no time.
I'll reveal more later, but what you do have? :)

One fitness pro that could do well I believe is Tanji Johnson.
Just look at the shape and muscle she had at the 2004 Ms Fitness Olympia... LINK (http://www.siouxcountry.com/showthread.php?t=58)

SWEET!!! This post is not even an hour old, and I'm getting great responses. Thanks!
One person would be a great FBB without question is Kimberly Scheideler (Kim Klein). The woman's legs are what some bodybuilders DREAM about! :awesome:

Juliana looks so darn cute in that jean skirt! And what a bod! I saw her compete last year in Co. @ The Shawn Ray Pro/Am show. She has an amazing package! Alot of us NPC CO. judges were all sitting together and we LOVEd her look! Unfortunately, she didn't place well. I talked to several of the IFBB judges and asked how come she didn't place high. They said she was too muscular and too hard. Hmmm....that made me upset. lol!

No on Ali Huston, she has a phenomenal FIGURE physique, great shoulders, tapered waist etc.
Okay, this thread is bugging me a bit. I know if I got Andrea Swanson in here she'd agree too lol. But the answer to the direction of figure is not for all muscular competitors to run for the hills of female bodybuilding. I do NOT support the bikini thin figure look.... AT ALL. In fact it makes me angrier then I care to say. But I love the sport of figure and don't think the answer is to "switch" to female bodybuilding just for the sake of placing well. Carrying a lot of muscle does not necessarily mean a switch to bodybuilding is needed. Figure is about a shape and symmetry, and if you present that shape and symmetry well with a great deal of muscle then God bless- you're a great FIGURE girl....bodybuilding is an entirely different sport....entirely different shape. I applaud figure women with a lot of muscle- in fact my carrying a lot of muscle is part of what got me involved in FigureRX.... look at the women they chose to sponsor: myself, Jamie Reed, Danielle Rouleau, Erin Riley, Lindsey Cope, and Ali Huston. ALL women who are known for lifting hard and heavy and carring more muscle. FigureRX is about preservinvg the muscle look in figure....and I am too. I don't think crossing over to bodybuilding is the answer.

I can see where this thread will go. I'm not going to post what has already been posted and argued about OVER and OVER again in the past, but I totally agree with Alli! All of these figure women mentioned in this thread who should "cross over to bb" are some my favorite types of physiques and to me, that is what I want to see in figure! I just do not understand why figure needs to be "muscled down!" I choose figure back in 2005 because I heard of these shows where women with muscles and great lines could be rewarded after training/dieting hardcore. I would NEVER have done it if I just assumed it was a bikini contest. There are already bikini and fitness bikini divisions for competitors to compete in, so why make figure seem like one of those! Please muscular figure women, stay with us!!!

By the way, it is very annoying to me when people at my gym ask why I do not compete in BB. It is a HUGE compliment to me, knowing they think I have enough muscle to compete as a BB but at the same time it gets me very mad for the future of figure, knowing that these people assume figure is more a sporty bikini model look.
When this person asked me this, I replied, 'Well, I do have a small waist and a good v taper, nice shoudlers, long torso, round glutes, and muscular legs." I said this meaning, figure looks for all these characteristics. And he apparently does not think figure is about that and assumed I was talkinr BB and he goes, 'Well, yeah, that is why you should do BB, you have what they want."
GRRR....frustrating.

I still dont' think most people in the main stream even know what "figure" is, just as so many of them think "bodybuilding" means you are a she-male so its not worth getting upset over uninformed comments....
What is both neat & frustrating is that there are people who can ride the boundaries of either category, but that doesn't mean they will do well in both within the judging criteria of one vs the other. I.e. when you compete in a particular federation you are judged by that federation's criteria regardless of how amazing your physique is in general....
But that said, I love that there are people who are holding out for the physique THEY want vs the physique that wins... Me personally - I love BB, I am bored to tears with the Figure competition requirements so I doubt it is for me. But at the same time I will be coming in small for my height in a BB show and I'm really interested to see how that is taken by the judges. I don't have a lot of interest in getting "pro size" simply because it doesn't feel healthy to me when I'm heavy and its not something I want to have to carry off season at my age.....
So :respect::respect: to the grass-roots rebels who are holding out for the body they want vs the one the federation wants!
Great posts Andrea and Sassy! I think its completely legit to say certain women are going to ride the fence of both sports. I've been asked if I do bodybuilding several times- even when i webcam everyone assumes I do bodybuilding, but I don't. I love figure and I'm with Andrea- we'll be holding out presenting the physiques we love to show and hoping that some day the federation sees fit to reward us!!!

This will probably piss people off but sorry, I aggree all the way with what Ondrea and Ali are saying. Their physiques should be the look of figure they are have beautiful lines, symemty, muscles and hardness and softness, they show that they train hard and work to bring that physique to the stage. and us bodybuilders should be what we want, bigger muscular and ripped to the bone if we want that is what a bodybuilder is. The lightheavy weight classes and the heavyweight classes aren't being knocked down for that, but By having more and more figure switch over it is making it very hard for us bodybuilders in the lighter classes to be ourselves and bring our physiques that we have worked so hard on for years and years and year.
I mean no desrespect to people and sorry if I pissed anyone off.

I both agree and disagree. While I agree wholeheartedly with the premise you, Andrea and Claire put forth (and I love how you addressed it in your sig), it sadly seems what we want for Figure may not be what it wants of us.

Interesting comments made on here but to look at it from the other side of the coin, I think it's a compliment for some of the names that have been thrown around here to even be considered as being able to make such a switch. Basically saying that so-and-so has the body type or the potential to take their body further if they want to. I don't think this thread is as serious as alot of people are making it out to be, more on the lines of hypothetical thinking. If many of the ladies on here stayed where they were currently at, I don't think there would be an outrage or backlash for not making a FBB jump. Much respect to all those who compete in BB, figure, or fitness on here and abroad. They each have their own challenges and ultimately its up to the individual themselves what path they choose.
Based on how she was looking on Gladiators, I think Jamie Reed could do it and Ali Moyer too
Both Jamie and I have been asked if we intend on crossing over. We both adamantly say no :) lol.

Uhh...did I make a mistake starting this thread? I think I unintentionally rubbed some people the wrong way, which was not the intent of this thread at all. :( I'll admit, I feel that figure (the way it's judged) is heading toward the way of a bikini model look, and it should be about bringing the best body you possibly can. The IFBB doesn't think that, sadly. IMHO, they are thinking "bonified Hawaiian Tropic". If there not, feel free to flame or correct me.
I agree with comments from you Alli, Dallas, Ondrea, and others who've made similar comments, BTW. :awesome::respect:

it's not a mistake to start the thread! Hell it sparked good discussion! I think I only meant to stand up and say I am PROUD to be a muscular figure competitor...and that even though I have the utmost repect for female bodybuilding, the "look" is not for me. I believe figure competitors SHOULD be muscular and I will continue to build and grow my physique and present that package on stage. I softened myself down for my last show to qualify for nationals....when I hit the national stage this year I want to be HARD. And if its rewarded- great. If not? I'm okay there too :) At the end of the day I want to love the way I look....and I like being a muscular figure girl!!!!

Well let's turn the discussion a little bit here, to practical considerations. Are there any career benefits for a figure competitor who is, say, placing mid-tier in national contests and then switches over and places at the top in bodybuilding? Are there more or less sponsorship funds available, for example?
At TeamRX we would shamelessly compensate people to keep them in figure ;), because we are looking to influence the sport in a more muscular direction (while keeping all those important figure physique qualities of course). But we also advocate that each athlete have a "portfolio" of sponsorships - a competition sponsor (like RX), supplement sponsor, local tanning, gym, etc.
Lori have you noticed differences between figure and BB in this regard?
Beni, have you noticed significant differences (other than the accolades surrounding a pro card) since your switch?

That's an interesting question. Hard for me to answer because this isn't really my career, and I haven't sought sponsorship from anyone, or had any offers either LOL. Of course, I would be happy to consider such an offer if one comes my way. :D
I guess I'd love to see some of the more muscular figure ladies give BB a try so that the same opportunities CAN be afforded to FBBs as figure competitors, should they want them.
There are not enough FBBs out there, and there is an over-abundance of figure competitors IMO...we could use a few of the more muscular ladies to help move FBB forward in a direction that provides more opportunities for all Fbbs.

on a sidenote... if you look at the top 5 placings at natl level shows...those girls AINT bikini model looking chicks.. ie... amanda quinlan.

man, i personally think it is all messed up, they say they want one thing, then there is a mixture of all body types in the top five at national shows. in my ht class at the NAs (class C), i thought the winner fit the bill, but all the rest were mixed. the 4th place finisher looked like a bikini model, then the 5th place finisher, daniel edmonds, was very muscular! who knows! just bring your best and try to go by the standards they set. but i am with the figurerx girls, i like msucle and have really been trying to get more of it!

I agree that figure should not go the way of the skinny bikini chick for sure. But if you look at the National shows, there are upwards of 250 girls who compete in figure at some of these shows, and the majority of them have pretty muscular psyques. Even the girls who are winning big shows with a "softer" or less muscular look are usually not close to Hawaiian Tropic bikini girls. Figure can spare a few of the more muscular girls... ;)
Bree's right...all you can do is do what's best for you and come into the show knowing that's what you did. :)

No. Erin is correct. Fitness is rewarded for slightly harder and more muscular. Look at past contest results for proof. The show that always stuck out for me was the 2006 Palm Beach Pro. Fitness gals came in BIG and HARD at that one.

ibarramedia-- to answer your question, fitness allows for a slightly harder and more muscular physique because of the training it requires to do the routine. The conditioning needed to get in shape for the routines as well as the requirement of strength elements is inevitably going to cause the women to be very lean and more muscular. Island Girl made a post about this in one of her threads where she discussed meeting with one of the head NPC officials (?)
LOL Alli--those smilies crack me up....I know, I'm a dork
Yes I meant Natalie Ariel...and Lindsay Cope!!!! Have I mentioned Lindsey Cope!?!?!
Natalie Ariel competed last weekend as a bodybuilder at the Great the Western Classic in Grand Rapids.

How bout this - Juliana Malacarne
Juliana has been my client for 2 years now and I must say I used to think that of her and Larissa Reis but this year Larissa reshaped her physique and brought a total package exactly what they are looking for
as far as juliana, I saw her and said oh my ur tiny she also did revamping on her physique and is alot smaller than these pics, shes getting closer to what they are now looking for.
In my opinion, I think my girlfriend Maggie Blanchard shud consider fbb shes hot, tiny, sassy, has an amazingly freakish physique the girl gets shredded!

She could definitely do it, one of the thickest backs I've seen in Fitness.

I think Stacy Wright would do very well in FBB. She has incredible muscularity. I'd miss sweating out the fitness routines with Drew, though.

Natalie Rae Ariel, figure to fbb crossover @ the 2009 NPC Western Mich show. Even more than I admire her body in these pics, what I REALLY love is how it looks like she's having a blast!

I'm a bit lost for words, EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!! As I am sitting here on my couch, just having woke up from a very NEEDED nap, I decided to get online and try to catch-up on here.....I haven't had much time for ANY forum play lately....I just so happened to STUMBLE into this thread....
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE for the kind words.
YES, I decided to switch over and could not be happier! I have found my HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has been the HARDEST prep of my life, for many reasons, but stepping off that stage Oct. 24th with 2 swords(that I have been wanting since my very first show in Dec 2005), made EVERY SECOND worth it! I had a HUGE support group with me throughout the prep. My fiance(Nate Wolfe from wolfpacknutrition.com) did my diet. So many people said that it would not work, having a significant other, whom I also live with, do my diet...but HE WAS THERE EVERYDAY....doing EVERYTHING!!!! He cooked, cleaned, and shopped.
Another reason why it was so hard is because while I was taking a LONG OFFSEASON in 2008, I was also focusing on my CAREER. I am a Cook County Correctional Officer now. I did not realize how hard the prep would be with such a demanding job. I won't get into the exacts, because I know EVERYBODY has THEIR hardships, I will jst say that I am GRATEFUL that he was there...I could not have done it without him!!! Don't get me wrong, I BUSTED MY ASS for this show....I also step on stage again this coming Saturday(Midwest Ironman).
We knew coming into the show that my height was going to be what my DISADVANTAGE as a BB. I am 5'7"(I weighed in at 132.6, thought the scale may have been off by a couple of lbs...but who knows...I was about 136.6 when we left on Friday morning from Chicago). So we knew that our focus was going to have to be CONDITIONING! Size, I still need to work on a lot of areas. My QUADS are EXTREMELY hard for me to bring up....my calves I owe to genetics. Since I left the stage as a Figure competitior, I have worked on bringing up my Chest, Back, Hamstrings & Quads the most.....the shoulders and arms just came along.
I am happy where I am at. I could not feel more BLESSED than I did at the Western Michigan. The feedback I got from sooooooooo many people...so many people I have never met before.....was unreal. So I continue to train from the heart....as a FBB:awesome:
No SET plans for what happens after the Ironman this weekend, except a good offseason to come back even better in 2010.
I keep a blog/journal on my website, but there are a couple of forums I frquent when I can, and just do not have the time to commit to any journals on a forum. JUST BEING HONEST and I would hate to NOT keep it up after starting one. That is why I just chose to keep one on my site, so if anyone is interested in ever gandering over to check it out, it is is my sig...feel free...it has my workouts and diet listed on a daily basis.
SORRY THIS TURNED INTO A BOOK!!!!!!!!!

I forgot to say....
I HAD A BLAST up there! I was a nervous wreck all day, but seriously when I got up there.....it was like going through the motions....I don't even rememeber what I was thinking during the mandatories.lol
The routine is what makes it so fun! I had Colette Nelson do my music and coreogrph the routine and it was such a blast!!!!!!
Thanks Again:)

Playing CATCH-UP with LIFE(and the BOARD) seems to take FOREVER after a show(or 2..lol)

Things are good though. Nate and I are getting Wolfpack Nutrition underway and we have decided on what shows I will be doing next year, so hitting it hard in the gym to hopefully make some improvements by then........

HDPhysiques is proud to announce that our long-time friend and one of our most popular models ever, Tanya Hyde, is switching to bodybuilding in 2010. She recently made the announcement when we launched her official website last Wednesday, www.tanyafitness.com, an HDPhysiques-powered members site, with Tanya's personal management, and custom touches (healthy recipes, interactive Q&A, future cooking videos (she is a CIA trained pro chef), and at a minimum - weekly updates!)
Tanya's currently planning on making Jack and Ann Titone's "NPC Midwest" as her debut bodybuilding show - April 2010.
