Childrens' Miracle Surgery Saves Unborn Twins

by Lisa Hughes
Dec 17, 2007

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A Methuen family's babies were saved by surgery before they were born thanks to Children's Hospital Boston, which is at the forefront of a new health field.

After a serious problem was discovered before Broderick and Bryce Villers were born and nearly took their lives.

The red flag went up when ultrasounds discovered that one twin was much smaller than the other.

"Which is not normal for identical twins," said Dr. Rusty Jennings.

Jennings heads the Advanced Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Boston, one of only four in the country treating babies in the womb.

"What most people don't know is when you have identical twins they have one blood supply," Jennings said.

That blood supply was unbalanced, so each twin received the wrong amount of blood. In a high-risk operation, Jennings divided the blood vessels so each fetus received a healthy supply. It was the first time the surgery was done at Children's.

"Without the procedure, one or both of them would have died," he said.

"We're just so fortunate to be so close right here," said the boys' mother, Stephanie Villers. "To be the first ones to have the surgery."

The Fetal Care Center is also engaged in cutting edge research that one day could lead to breakthroughs in pre-natal care.

But for Stephanie and Ernie Villers, the miracle has already happened.

"I never take a day with them for granted because you never know what's going to happen day to day," Ernie Villers said.

"I hope that it inspires them to think, 'Wow, I'm pretty lucky to be here. I better do something good while I'm here,'" Stephanie Villers said.

Children's hospital has established the world's first center for fetal health. The mission -- nothing less than finding out why things go wrong before birth and devising treatments to correct the problems.

Awwwww Sioux! Thanks so much for posting that!!! It just made me all teary I don't want them to grow UP!!!! (I havn't seen that in a while) WAHHHHHHH okay, now I'm being a big baby! LOL

I'm very glad you posted though hope the members will see when I say I have a INDESCRIBABLE sickening obsession and love for my kids...now you see why cause they are so stinking cute! LOL (ok I'm a lil bias)

Well I will be starting a journal for my next prep soon and as many of you know...its usually filled with stories of the kids throwing something in the toilet at the gym or me drooling as I cute their pizza LOL (you think I'd be used to it by now!) Or how we run to soccer, then to the gym, then all in bed before 7 so I can go BACK to the GYM! I always say my life is the BB version of Everybody Loves Raymond and thats no joke! LOL

Here are the lil bubs now...recently had their 18 month check-ups and their are HEALTHY HEALTHY boys!! This phase is the most amazing they're learning new words EVERYDAY, have SUCH personalities and just crack us UP! But its also filled with temper tantrums, time outs, and the last little bit of snuggling as they're too busy running around to stop for hugs as often LOL I'm soaking up every minute!

unfortunately yes... they were doing good for a while with the one word stuff but now the sentences are getting shady after like word three... but they nod at eachother... feed eachother... def a love/hate relationship... they steel eachothers cups and stuff but you cannot take it away from the stealer and give it back... oh no unless you want a KICKING SCREAMING CHILD he has to hand it back like it was his plan all along lol

Ok, so how come I never knew this?? Did you talk about this during your thread on ALR booth girl? If so, I can't believe I missed that somehow. I am so happy for you that those boys are strong, happy, and EQUALLY healthy! That was an incredible story, girl. Give them a hug from me today! God is good!

Awww . . . what beautiful kids, Stephanie! It's just not fair how fast they grow, is it? My third (and last) just finished potty training and got rid of her pacifier. No more babies :(
It sounds like you are a great mom, and are able to balance your family with your training so well. What an inspiration! :respect: And fixing food for the kids all day has to be the hardest part of dieting!!!

I didn't know she took her MySpace down. She is on a break from the boards. She's mentioned she'll be back after the Jr Nationals.
