Thanks for putting that together for us, Soo.

Is the figure competition a pro qualifier?

Nope no one will turn pro that weekend. I hope someday that will change. :)

Maria Segura who won the Arnold women's bodybuilding amateur title last year, already qualified to turn pro the year before at the 2007 IFBB North American. And as you know she'll be competing in the Ms International this year.

She just waited to apply for her pro card. :)

Some women overseas prefer to remain amateur even if they win a pro qualifier. I know of one woman who actually went back to being an amateur after competing in a few pro shows.

Maybe this can be brought up during one of the Arnold planning meetings (assuming they having something like that). I mean, it would hurt for this it be brought up. :awesome:

Are you serious?? You can decide not to apply for pro status..do a few more amateur shows...then go back and get your card..that doesn't sound fair at all...seems like you should atleast have to win a pro qual again. Wow, a PRO go back down to amateur, that's even crazier...but i guess that's what's going on. Johanna Dejager - Ontario, Canada came up on another board...apparently she got her PRO card by winning the 2007 Canadian Nats.., but she's on the amateur list..but her website says she's a pro also.

Yep I'm serious.

You still have to send in your paper work if you win a pro qualifier.

Johanna must be waiting just as Maria did.

Is it fair? Good question.

Yes the Ms International will be her pro debut.

Maybe Johanna is thinking if she wins the amateur she will be invited to the 2010 Ms International.

I'm happy about the big turnout for fitness...it was pretty small last year. I LOVE watching the fitness routines!

As I wrote in other thread, this list should not be complete, a few names who have gotten already "yes", are not on the list. So, I assume it will be updated.

Aaaw, I love to see Russian girls in this show, interesting to see Elena Shportun again on stage.

In figure, well.... it will be interesting mix on stage.

About this "fair" thing. IMO why it should be must to turn pro? In Europe it is very common, even those who have won many many times nationals and are many times' world champions, most do not want to be a pro OR they wait a few years to build pro level physique even if they would be eligible for pro card. And here in some countries' federations winning nationals is not enough (its kinda nothing here) - you need to place top 3 in World Championships to get pro card (to get idea how difficult that is, fitness and figure over all winners in team universe placed out of top 10 in world championships). IMO it is a better system than this 12 pro cards a show, every girl turning pro and showing 99% of them not-so-pro-level-physiques. Well it does not bother me, but I see nothing wrong if everyone does not turn pro, or that some want to do more amateur shows before turning pro... some simply want to compete as amateurs and become better, I like that way more. And no, you are not a pro until you get your name in IFBB pro register.

actually, Nadia Nardi won it in 2007 and Cindy Phillips was a awarded the 2nd pro card. last year, in 08 Johanna competed at North Americans, placed 3rd(she should have placed higher I thought), then a week later she won her class at Canadians and was awarded the 2nd pro card. ATHENA Siganakis won the overall at Canadians.

hey for someone 'in the know', i have a question....johanna dejager is on the list to compete in the arnold amateur but she got her pro-card at the canadian nationals in 2008. did she not accept her pro-card or why can she compete at the amateur show??

looks like a good line-up........

oops, i just realized that someone asked this same question....but still it is confusing why someone would do this...and can she still just take her pro-card 'anytime' in the future??? hmmmmmm

Elena Sphortun also qualified for her pro card by winning the 2007 World Championships in Santa Susanna. I think these girls just want to win this show so they can have their winners pic taken with Arnie. And who can blame them? I'm hoping for a Johanna - Elena posedown for the overall title (with Johanna winning of course). Either way it's going to be an awesome show.

...Last year, in 08 Johanna competed at the North Americans, placed 3rd(she should have placed higher I thought)...

That's very magnanimous of you Kim - what with you coming 2nd an'all. I thought you looked great. Tough job judging these things sometimes.

If she wins this event, she will take some heat, just as Maria did in 08.

I dont understand this problem many have with European competitors coming to Arnold amateur.

First of all, there is clear said that non-usa-compeitor you need to be successful international competitor to be able to attend in Arnold am show. You need to have top placements in international contests, so YOU NEED to be that to get "yes". Then, we do not have pro qualifiers here, like you have in the states. Nearly every country have rules what you MUST have before you are able to turn pro. In some countries you need to place in TOP 3 at the worlds or something, besides winning MANY times nationals, for examble. Whole pro thing goes here totally different than it goes in the States. There is no rule that you need to apply for pro card after winning world championships.

I have a huge respect for these amateur girls here. They compete FOR years and years and years at amateur level. For many of them ,Arnold Amateur and competing in the States is the best moment of their career. Many want to compete there before turning pro. European competitors have a huge respect for USA competitors. They are not coming there to get a photo with Arnold, they are coming there because competing in the States, where the bodybuilding scene is the biggest in the whole world, is for them something real special. That's why feel really bad that many write how Europeans come here to compete as amateur even if they are pros, and taking "easy wins" No, they are not pro competitors. They want to compete with good ones, "over there".

And I really understand why many of them do not want to turn pro. Every single pro show for women are in the states, competing active would be nearly impossible for most of them, and besides, for examble judging criteria in figure is a much different. (Just an examble, Juliana Malacarne over all winner in the worlds... Monica Hoyer - over all winner in European Championships... )

Every year we are so thrilled here if USA girls come here after winning team universe to compete with our best competitors. Sad that some feel that best european competitors should stay home and not coming to the States.

Ah, I just had to say this, as this same thing goes on in every board.

Well anyway, this will be a great show, and I cant wait to see how judging goes in Figure..

Good points Anne. Just to clarify, I believe Johanna, Jo Stewart and Elena have all qualified to enter pro competitions. But until such time as they fill out the form for their pro licence they are perfectly entitled to enter the Arnold Amateur. Also Johanna booked to compete at the Arnold well before she won her Pro card at the Canadians last November.

She appears to be misleading people as she states she's an IFBB Pro on her website.

Johanna won her Pro card after 11 years competing at the national and international level. She certainly earned it and isn't misleading anyone.

powergirl
01-23-2009, 10:47 PM
that makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

there certainly are differences in the US vs. Europe so it is good to understand. i just know in canada we are always wishing there was more than 1 opportunity (sometimes 2 when the N.A. is not on the same day) to earn a pro-card. so to be able to compete in the US at a prestigious event is certainly an honour.

i wish everyone well and suggest someone promote a show in Japan next year ;)

She certainly earned it and isn't misleading anyone.

Her website states she is a "2008 IFBB PROFESSIONAL".

So either the list is incorrect or she has yet to fill out the form for her pro card.

01-23-2009, 11:42 PM
I read that as a list of her BBing achievements - the most recent being her pro card win in 2008. As explained above, she applied to enter the Arnold way before she won her pro card and is perfectly entitled to compete. I think you're making something out of nothing here.

Looking forward to an awesome contest.

I will be competing against Johanna in the LW class at the Arnold Amateur. It does not make me upset or intimidated that she has already earned her Pro card and will be allowed to compete in Amateur..it makes me feel privileged to be on the list with her, and it makes me work harder. I admire her for all her hard work and am inspired by such an awesome athlete. Knowing that I will be on stage with someone like her will make me train harder, diet stricter, and bring my best to the stage. She ups the bar, and it always makes for a better competition, when there is great competition! We are in this together. Female Bodybuilding needs more good athletes and it is finally coming back..Good Luck Johanna and all the ladies. I am honored to be among you all. Good luck to all the athletes at the Arnold!

Exactly, you are not pro unless you won a national title that is a pro qualifier.
Also if she has not submitted for her pro card, ( by emailing Jim Manion himself)
dead line was January 15th costing normal price 200.00 , after that its 400.00

funny huh, you earn pro card but you still have to buy it lol! did not know
until Dave Follansbee let me in on this.

However, Dave Follansbee , would be the man i would speak to about this so it can uncover any of this confusion.

Arnold Classic / Ms.International is only by invite if you submitt to them after requesting pro card from Jim Manion if you got a National win.

The amateur show, does it say National Qualifier or Pro Qualifier, because if it was a Pro Qualifier hell i would of done it when it first came out!!

so either i miss reading on all this or this is what your saying
aawwwwwwweeeeeee grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  i confused ha ha !

hi guys, just my view on things.. I have never dreamt of coming over the arnold amateur just to get my pic taken with arnold. so the European girls are not competing just for that reason. For me personally, standing amongst the competitors in the arnold is the icing on the cake in regards to my career. No matter how my placing was to be last year, standing amongst you american girls outshone my win at the Masters Worlds. Your country has held my admiration the whole of my bodybuilding life.

To turn Pro. Well for some of us girls, me in particular, that has never been a goal for me up until now. My country in NZ still sees me as freaky and I compete at a tiny 56kgs... so I am very much an outsider here in NZ. Muscular girls in most countries are accepted well, here in NZ, ummph NO.. I can jump on a plane for 3 hours to sydney and have approval and acceptance there but NZ no..

I competed with Johanna at the Masters Worlds 2007 and her and I were both of the same feelings, how big do we want to be, and are we prepared to continue to gain size to reach Pro Level. Staying in the amateurs for an extra few competitioins has given us the confidence to want to go on and upwards. So I wish Johanna good luck with the Arnold. And everyone else who has been busting their guts for the last year with this competition in mind. Im eager to stand and be judged against the best once again, and Im up for the challenge to compete against the woman, american, european or otherwise. Oh my name is not on the list yet, but we have had numerous emails of confirmation so I am not worried as yet about being left out. Lastly I love this forum with a vengence. You girls are so supportive of each other. It reinforces what I believe about your country and makes me want to compete with you even more, thanks everyone.. see you in a little under a month

Great post Jo! I had no idea NZ is so anti-female bodybuilding. That is unfortunate, and sad to hear your countrymen do not support you.

We here are looking forward to watching you compete in one month! :respect:

I checked the list and you are now on it................

Just updated the names of the competitors doing Bikini!

This will be interesting. I noticed they allowed crossover in Figure and Bikini. Tibisay Robles - Miami, Florida will be doing both.

The gal that won overall in an INBF contest I did in October has decided to hold off accepting her pro card for at least the full time she has to decide it seems (1 year) so she'll be standing next to me at my 2nd contest this spring. Hopefully this time I will best her!

Fair, who knows? Oh well.

Anyway, good luck to all you ladies out there. It is going to be one crazy show. There are so many gals from ALL OVER! That is so great...it really is too bad this show doesn't hand out a few pro cards! ...I'll call Arnold! ;)

Just to let you know, tho for along time I found muscular women very attractive, I never let anyone know thinking maybe I was weird, and I believe in this country alot of guys felt the same way. But over time alot of the barriers came down. I believe the same thing will happen in NZ. In time
