But did anybody check out the rate at the hotel? :p
We're pulling a bunch of details together, and should have it all up in RX contest central for this show soon ....
Not hearing a whole lot of buzz on the NPC side, as in years past when great athletes like Amanda Quinlan and Pamela Soper showed up and launched themselves into the national scene. Anybody stepping up?

Update I posted on Hardbody.com
http://www.hardbody.com/news/2008/03/26/updated-pittsburgh-pro-figure-competitor-list/
I’ve received a few emails asking why are there more names being added to the list for the IFBB Pittsbugh Pro show when the deadline has passed. It’s pretty simple, this is the first show of the year (the Arnold was by invite) and many pros were either a) not aware of the deadline or b) expressed an interest to the IFBB but the office hadn’t received the signed contract from the competitor. Some women are all bent out of shape by this and my advice is… relax. Lists change all the time for one reason or another. Focus on yourself, don’t worry about who your competition is and have fun.

Wow. It's amazing how different bone structures work. I'm 5'0 and weighed 99-100 at my first show looking stringy as hell and on the brink of death. It's shocking how full she looks at such a diminutive size.

Yes - it's also a testament to how photos are often misleading. The most common response competitors get is, "you're so tiny you always look so big in pictures". Many of the figure/fitness women do not look any where near as big or ripped as they do on stage.

It is so annoying when people talk about us looking big. It's like..r u freaking kidding me...as I put my hands down into my into my waistband of my size zero pants that are literally falling off me. I am curvy and still keep my booty round and high but it still gets down to tiny tiny!
This one guy looked at my AC pics and was like, u do BB right, u r too big for figure....GRRRRR! I told him to stop going to small regional shows and start coming to national level ones, so he can get an idea of what figure really looks like! I then showed him comparision shots of me and some of the other women who were bigger than me...idiots!

One thing the general public does not realize is that FBB/Fit/Fig some times gives an illusion of size. Some of the bigger fbbs from the heavyweight division "don't look as big as they seem". I guess the size and illusion along with proportion and shape are part of the game. :)

Hey Girls!
Prep is going great! Carb depletion is a wonderful thing. LOL
I started dieting 8 weeks out since I try to stay pretty lean in the off season. I only have a few more pounds to lose. It is hard to judge how much I should lose because I have added maybe 5 solid pounds of muscle in the off-season ...and got a BA!! (that also means new suits for this season, too - yeah!)
After Pittsburgh I plan to head to Chicago for Jr Nationals. I competed there last year and had an awesome time.

Hi Jen! Welcome to SC. I am sure that you will love it here. Everyone is so great.
Is anyone else doing the amatuer figure at the Pittsburg show? I have some friends in Charleston that are doing this show. I am really thinking about doing this show. My prep is going well and there will be alot of the same judges at this show as the Jr. USA and other national level shows that I plan to do. So I just might be going to Pittsburg in a few weeks.
If anyone has done this show in the past I would love to hear what you thought about it. Gary Udit normally puts on a top notch show so I am thinking that it would be worth going. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marie Ann!
Yes, I already love it here! I did not know this site existed until the NPCfiguretwins invited me over a few days ago. It is awesome!
Sounds great that you may be coming to Pittsburgh! I am not sure of anyone else right now who is doing the show but there is usually a pretty good turnout of competitors.
This is my thrid time doing this show. (I live in Pittsburgh....only a mile or so from the venue). I did the show in 2005, 2007, and now this year.
You are right - Gary Udit is great and his shows are always top notch. He promotes the Master's Natioanls here in July too.
But actually Jim Manion is the promoter of the Pittsburgh show as this is his hometown. So of course this event is awesome. Organized, planned, runs smoothly, etc.
But this is the first year that they will be having both pre-judging and finals for the figure and fitness on the same day. In years past the Pro figure, and NPC fitness and figure pre-judging was Friday night and then the finals were Saturday night. This year pre-judging and finals are both on Saturday. So it will be a bit different in that respect.
Anyway, if you decide to come to Pittsburgh - let me know! I know the area well since I live here so I would be happy to help if you need help nagivating around the city and to know where things are located - such as the grocery store and the best place to eat after the show! LOL
Talk to you soon!
- Jen :)

About Pro Nicole Wilkins...
Terry Goodlad:
I talked to Nicole last week and she is going to drop about 3lbs from her Arnold weight and she feels that will be exactly where she needs to be. She has no intention of ever being super hard and big. Young girl but she gets it and has not been sucked into the "get big to be a pro" thing. I would like to see her do well as a pro but I am thinking that may happen faster in figure than fitness for her.

Pearo Hits Sin City
Melissa Pearo made a trip to Las Vegas this past weekend to get some shooting done before she competes in Pittsburgh in a couple weeks at the IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Figure Championships. Pearo is a computer programmer for the FAA so monday to friday for the comely figure competitor is very "button-down and comfortable shoes" but she kindly shed the shackles of her low-key go government-grey work life to explore the more eye catching side of her personality.
Pearo is one of the IFBB Pro Figure athletes that was known for her muscularity and hardness but in passing conversation she welcomes the new rules and demand for softer bodies on stage. She was very close to what her contest shape will be when we shot and expects to present a softer, more streamlined look in Pittsburgh on May 3rd.

My weight was stuck for a couple of weeks and the scale just would not budge....now I have to watch that it doesn't start to take a nose dive!
I am really excited about this show. I feel like I can relax and enjoy competing since I am already qualified for a National show. .....but 6 weeks after Pittsburgh is Jr's and I will probably be a basket case! LOL

Anyways, GO GIRL!! Mamma POWER!! :awesome:Alot of good competition at this show!!! Should be a good one!!
And yes, Alot of people does not realize how tiny I am until they meet me in person...lol!...I almost hit the 5 " feet mark and I usually compete at 96 lbs...

FigureRX's 2008 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro preview...
http://www.bodybuildingweekly.com/index.php?news=430
FigureRX Magazine has released an in-depth preview for the 2008 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Figure Championships, which will be held on Saturday, May 3rd.
April 25, 2008
Welcome to the FigureRX contest preview for the first major post-Arnold figure show of the season, the IFBB Pittsburgh Pro! We think that this lineup is an excellent indication of what we may see all year - this show is stacked! Between comebacks, past champions, professional debuts and Olympia and Arnold stars, the competition for the top five (and especially the top three Olympia qualifying spots) will be intense. Picking a top five for this show led to a lot of arguments in the corner conference room!

We just arrived in PA last night and are settled into our room. Alan and I drove since it is only about five hours from Detroit. I relaxed last night and today before I go conveniently across the street to the venue for our athletes meeting at 5pm. There are around 20 girls in the IFBB Pro Figure line up, so it will be great competition!
Some of the girls I met at the Arnold this year, but it looks like a few new faces are going to be here too. I feel good about what I am bringing to the stage. I’ve worked really hard and feel like this is the best I’ve ever looked. Hopefully the judges feel the same.

Hardbody.com:
I caught up with a few of the figure pros tonight as they made their way through check-in. Catherine Andersen is ready to go but it seems her google maps isn’t working the best. Her hotel is located by the airport, which is a 30-40 minute drive. Huong Arcinas is in great shape and appears to have done her homework this time. She tells me she is weighing 94lbs (that’s at 4′10″). Heather Mae French’s plane was delayed and she was frantically on her way to the hotel when I met up with her. IFBB Fitness Pro Shannon Dey made an appearance at the check-in and will be guest posing in a couple weeks at the NPC JR USAs. Carla Salotti, IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, tells me she was in a car accident and her mother has been ill so she has been out of the gym a few weeks. She looked great and has her sights set on the Tampa Pro Show. Jenn Gates had just finished up a photo shoot with JM Manion when I saw her and she said it was fun and went well. She is at the show working the 8-ball Nutrition booth. She looked like she was ready to compete but laughed when I told her that. Heather Green wrapped up a shoot yesterday with JM Manion and is anxiously awaiting her after contest meal which I’m told may involve pizza. Allison Jones-Williams was her usual sparky self when I saw her earlier in the day and I witnessed her being wrong for what may be the first time. Yes, tis I who runs this site. http://www.hardbody.com/news/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif Kim Oddo was looking jacked! Dude has been hitting the weights since I saw him in Nationals and looks a couple weeks out from a show.

The prejudging has ended and the top three will be Amy Fry, Nicole Wilkins and Teresa Anthony. It most likely be in that order. They are all three great but I am most impressed with the pro debut of Ms. Anthony. She will most likely qualify for the Olympia her first time out. Very impressive showing. Nicole and Amy are both beautiful. The tall girls ruled this morning. The remaining top five are a toss up but it looks like Shannon Meteraud and Heather Mae French will get the nod. Huong Arcinas looked great despite being the shortest competitor on stage. Heather Green should place in the top ten as well as Catherine Andersen. I’ll report more later when back to the hotel. The ladies all came in softer and definitely listened to the mandate. Check out the photos on flexonline.com later.

Well ... what could I say.... The first thing I said when saw pics "they could be harder". Personally I liked more the harder look... But maybe I just have to live with this..
I noticed only 19 competed. What happen to Donna Louise Jones, & Briana Tindall?
I wondered if Donna names should have even been on the list? I wondered that when I saw it. I thought IFBB rules said you could only do one division per year, and she did fitness already. I have no clue, just as an aside..

But, we know we end up seeing a mixed bag of apples at the amateur level - let's see how that goes this year. I usually like a harder look, but these ladies carried this "softer" look incredibly. None looking like just swimsuit models - they all looked so good. I noticed Shannon Meteraud immediately softened her look since she usually comes in harder and continues to look great. Congrats to the top 5 winners :awesome:

Agreed. It's obvious how much softer they are from the rear shots. I also usually like a harder look, but everyone looked awesome!
It is nice to know that they actually rewarded the look they requested... of course, the new "mandate" seemed like it was followed pretty consistently, so it's hard to say what would've happened had they not.

Congrats! How did MO do? I saw some comparison shots and I think she was center in call outs and looked great!
Even though girls came in softer, those lights on that stage in Pittsburgh are really weird. They REALLY soften everyone and the detail is lost in pictures. I saw it when I competed there last year, when comparing the girls I saw in person to the pictures... some were very lean and had lots of lines, but the pictures showed none of that. I saw a bunch of other peeps posting about how the lighting was bad there, but there wasn't any real way to improve it.

Indeed, not much hardness in this show. Little vascularity.
We'll see if the trend continues.
Dare I challenge the trend??? :boxer:I don't think its possible for me to look that soft. I can come in softer in the lower body just by holding more water but upper body just always ends up vascular and leaner looking. I haven't trained arms in years and they still look like I do. Its crazy. I'm sticking with my approach....try to show up with a physique I like as well as taking heed of the standards set forth by the judges. Let's see what the Cal brings next!

Just wondering if any pros would be kind enough to give feedback on what the judges had to say to them. For example, I know Heather Green mentioned on a board somewhere that she had been told to stop training legs. Did the judges tell you to tone down the muscle Heather?

Seems like the lighting was bad and probly smoothed them out in the pics. Every site I have been to has someone commenting on it, so I think we can probably assume they were a bit harder than the pics show.

The women were all softer on stage and the top three were spot on with what should have been rewarded to go to the Olympia. They were NOT hard at all, all the women. It was very clear the women got the message and the judges rewarded it.
The lighting wasn't that bad. It is held in a very old historic venue, which is very cool, but it makes it difficult to light.

LOL!! I was told by a judge that my legs were too soft. "Just tighten up your legs...."
It's going to be hard for me to find the balance, since so far my legs last year were too hard at some shows and this year so far, too soft. My opinion, we need to come in a little softer now, and I mean A LITTLE.

I agree with Heather in we need to come in just a LITTLE softer, which is just changing small things...not "drying out" as much, not pumping up before going on stage, standing a tad more relaxed on stage, not hitting or flexing legs as hard. You could tell most girls were standing a tad bit more relaxed with their legs...job well done!!:respect:
Amy, Nicole, and Theresa looked Fab. And Shannon really looked great too..she had come in smaller this show and not as "hard" still TIGHT though!!!

Hi Jenn and Heather! I have to say, it is nice to hear the pros agreeing with going a bit to the softer side. I totally aree with you on your statement there. Seems like everyone was just a TAD softer, but still hard enough without taking the extreme. It always kills me that when the judges say a bit softer everyone starts with the whole bikini contest comments and I just don't get it! I live on the beach and there aint no bikini contest bodies that look like you ladies! Looks like everyone brought what the judges asked for and there is NO WAY anyone looked like bikini models!!! GREAT JOB!!!! YOU ALL LOOKED PHENOMENAL!!!

I'm happy that I can still see abs on Amy... this takes some worrying off of my shoulders.............
Oh yes....all the girls still had abs. They still want us lean and tight!!
The judges are not asking for that much change. Just the small things...like I said posing more relaxed on stage, not flexing the legs as much...
also not drying out as much....just avoiding the real hard, dry look...which is lots healthier. and actually looks healthier on stage.
also not pumping up before going on stage.
has anyone been to a national level show for the last two years....the judges would say over and over to relax the shoulders to all figure girls...which all makes sense now. Not sure if they've said that at the Pro shows???
hope this makes sense. I just really don't think what they are asking is a bad thing!! The girls at Pittsburgh all still looked GREAT!!

Thank you so much for clearing this up Jenn. I'm not gonna lie to you guys and gals; when I heard about the changes, I seriously thought this was gonna add fuel to the fire for figure critics on the whole "figure is nothing but a bikini contest" thing.
I'm happy to say that I was wrong and those defending this were right from the beginning. ;) However...I won't call this change a success until this year's Olympia is over. Is that acceptable?

Ruth Silverman:
LINK (http://www.ironmanmagazine.com/blogs/ruth/?p=93)
Hometown honey Amy Fry scored her first pro victory at the ’08 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Figure Championship on May 3, surprising absolutely no one who’s been paying attention to current action in the figure ranks. Second was Nicole Wilkins, who’s now earned Olympia qualifications in both the fitness and figure—also not a shock to this reporter—while Teresa Anthony, flying under the media buzz, picked up the third Big O slot in her pro debut.
Nineteen built-by-barbell bodies lined the stage in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial auditorium for Jim Manion’s annual event, held in conjunction with the NPC Pittsburgh Championships. It was the first show since the Figure International—and since the athletes received a letter from the IFBB Pro League (of which Mr. Manion is the chairman) asking them to tone it down, physiquewise. The perceived wisdom in the press pit was that the ladies had complied. I was too focused on trying to photograph them to notice at the time, but in comparing photos from the two shows—and allowing for differences in lighting, cameras and other relevant factors—it appears that they did, somewhat, starting with Fry, whose six-pack and shoulders were not quite as etched.
Heather Mae French brought a beautiful presentation to the stage and finished fourth, making this the breakout competition she’s been seeking since she hit the pros a couple of years ago. Fifth went to veteran Shannon Meteraud, whose lean, not-too-hard and not-too-soft body may have been at its best ever. There’s little doubt that both those athletes will get their Olympia qualifications by season’s end.
Other ladies who caught my eye included Heather Green, Catherine Anderson and Huong Arcinas. As they finish sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, I guess you could say I agreed with most of the panel’s choices. Bernadette Galvan and Allison Williams rounded out a strong top 10.
As mentioned above, Fry was the hands-down favorite to win this show (she placed third here last year), and not just because she comes from Pittsburgh. The prediction was a “well, duh”—she was coming off a third-place finish at the International and outranked everyone else in the lineup. Any hometown advantage was backed up by the package she brought to the stage.
Many of the women who came to quarter-turn in Pittsburgh were headed next to LosAngeles for the IFBB California Pro Figure Championship on May 24 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Culver City. That’s Memorial Day Weekend, which has become a huge time for physique festivities in the L.A. area, including the Cal Pro, the accompanying NPC California Championships (now open to United States residents from all 50 states) and the Muscle Beach International Classic in Venice on May 25 and 26.
At the Cal I’ll have a real photographer or two on hand, so I can concentrate on looking at what I’m looking at and get a better handle on the Goldilocks factor—as in who’s coming in not-too-hard and not-too-soft but just right.
