Hi there, so I'm the type of person that wakes up with a flat stomach and by end of day I look pregnant. What do you recommend I eat between morning pre-j and night show? I was thinking just yams and plain chicken, but how can I minimize the bloat and water retention?

Also, for fitness competitors, what do you eat/drink before or after routines? We do routines first and then change into our suits, so I would think I would be slightly glycogen depleted from my routine, can I eat something or wait until after the physique round, so I don't risk bloating or spilling over?

Thanks in advance- FF.

Hey!! In the morning between 5-8am I did a light carb up of just 1/2 cup of oatmeal and a few low sodium rice cakes every hr until 8am. After pre-j'n I ate the normal meal that I would normally eat on a regular day of dieting.

I'm notorious for spilling over so the potatoes/yams don't do any good 4 me!! Next go round I've decided not to water deplete.

I like to graze on my meal. I would eat a small steak or chicken breast with a small white potato or sweet potato. I also just take sips of water between prejudge and evening show

now are you talking about on a regular day or contest day you get bloated? because on a regular day you will eat sodium, drink alot of water and probably have veggies that bloat you...
on contest day you should be somewhat dry(not as much as fbbrs) only sipping water....I wud stick with steak and potatoe after prejudge..and then nibble on chicken and nuts later on to hold ya over until show....:-)cut veggies that make you bloat like 2 days out...and make sure you get fiber in to keep you regular..I may do dieter tea (2 bags)say friday morning to help keep tummy flat. hope this helps!

this is very interesting. i ate kidney bean stew that i had made about one month before my show. i froze it until show day. i nibbled on hot tamales and mike and ikes. i think i looked better at the evening show than i did at the pre-judging. everyone is different. but when it came to the evening show, i knew the judging was over. granted i didn't take first so i wasn't worried about judging for the overall.

This is interesting. I will def take your advice, just steak or chix and potato bites. These nuts should be Unsalted I assume?

Also, what is this dieter's tea- is it for gas? I have terrible gas all the time, everything makes me gassy!

I echo alot of the suggestions here... you shouldn't get alot of bloat or retention as long as you keep your liquid intake as low as possible. A burger isn't a bad meal between the shows, just keep the water down.

That is what I did last year. I knew I did not place top 5 so after Pre-J, I ate a cheeseburger! So good.!!!

Any fitness girls, please chime in, do you eat a candy bar or something to help you make it through your routine? I can barely do it slowly all the way through right now and can't do it at top pace- it's exhausting!!!

YESS!!! I eat Reese's peanut butter cups and then last weekend one of my fellow competitors had a snickers bar. Also, not sure if you're carb cycling or not, but I try to avoid practicing my routine on low-carbs as much as possible. I think I did it maybe once or twice but that's it. You just need too much energy to do a routine. Also, when I was first practicing my routine and building the stamina to do it, I'd either have a rice cake with 1 TB of peanut butter right before practice or 1 scoop of protein powder with a banana and some PB right before routine practice. The fat from the PB and the carbs from the banana REALLY helped with this. As I got more comfortable with my routine and closer to the show, I cut this out though.

do a steak and potatoe..and then chicken and saltfree nuts(1/4 cup) sips of water thru day.....

dieters tea helps you go to the bathroom..:D have you ever gotten constipated before a show?(I think we all have...no fun!) I would do it say at noon friday for a a sat show...you will go late friday night...it will give you that flat tummy feeling ....I have gas when I diet because of eggs, cabbage and veggies but I dont get bloated because Im regular...I take fiber in to help that and lots of fluids.......konsyl fiber is good(dave reccomends that or his fiber on his site)twice a day.......

Figure/fitness girls should keep drinking water to friday night anyways and that should help with energy...you wil cut some sodium so it will go thru you..
I always have alot of energy for a show because Im so excited...you will find it when you need it ..just dig deep!;)

I have Reese's cups or mini-candy bars every 30 minutes (yes, every 30 minutes!) starting at the morning meeting. Once I finish the routine, I maybe have one or two more pieces of candy. Helps keep your energy up and your veins out. I have lean steak and a white baked potato in between pre-judging and finals. Then more candy backstage if I remember. Don't cut out water completely, you will need it to get through the routine!

I use 2 scoops of vitargo before routine round. It's sort of hard to find now that Pure Vitargo has stopped manufacturing the product, but trueprotein.com has it, and I have also found it at GNC. It's a huge bolus of carbs that is sugar-free and sits lightly on your stomach....I cannot do the candy bars as simple sugars cause me to bloat (not to mention the crash and burn/rebound hypoglycemia an hour later).

Other girls do NO explode, candy bars, rice cakes and pb/jam, or a high carb protein bar.

After the prejudging, unless you are concerned about the overall, I don't think it really matters. If you are lean enough, you can eat pretty much anything and not worry too much about 'spilling'.....as long as you exercise portion control and don't dramatically alter your water intake.

Thank you ladies, I've done figure before and remember feeling pretty 'empty' the whole day, as I need to eat lots to have energy. During figure I think I just ran on fumes, but doing an 'all out' routine with lots of strength moves, I would think I need a little sugar or something. Thanks again, I appreciate all the replies.
