View Full Version : Few fitness competitors for swfc in BC....

So sad to report that the SWFC has ZERO ENTRIES FOR FITNESS!!!!
This makes me soooo sad!!!!!! (and wondering.... why?)
yes, we know that with the addition bikini, many are switching to this category... and we had already lost many fitness gals to figure, since it is easier on the body, and with injuries etc.
Numbers were declining for sure... but NONE?? to not even have fitness at all!!! This makes me want to cry!!!!!
Anyone wanna help me SAVE FITNESS in BC!!!??? What can we do!!??
I started in Fitness back in 1989!!! (yes, I am OLD!!!!!) I remember doing the Wally Boyko shows - badly!!! but I did them!!! Not a dancer or gymnast, and it was painful to watch, but I did okay!! Then they added figure... and I could breathe a sign of relief!! But I have seen many amazing fitness ladies over the years... and really do love this division!!!!!!!
Is it like this in the other provinces too?? Are numbers falling? or at none as well?
Nationals had some good talent - but it does seem like every year it gets smaller and smaller!!! And now with the addition of women's physique - will we lose even more!!!!??

Many of the shows in Michigan offer Fitness as a category, and sometimes we also have no entries. Typical is 1 or 2 girls, never more than that. It is sad. Fitness is my favorite division to watch, without a doubt.

We will have to meet to brainstorm how we can change this dawn!!! :)
My good friend IFBB Pro Sherry Boudreau (Jensen) just reminded me that there is only 6 pro shows in 2012 for fitness gals... so this might also be a reason for the change at the regional levels.... cause when you get to the pros, there is a lot less choices for shows to compete at anyways!
Guess we can do what we can at our provincials levels... but nothing we can do about IFBB.

I'm kind of surprised considering the NorthWest is home to Tanji Johnston's Save Fitness. How many competed in fitness last year?

That sucks. I love fitness, definitely my fav division. I wish I could do it tbh!

Do you offer junior fitness out there in BC? In Ontario they have started offering junior fitness which is helping to grow the category again. If the younger girls are hooked then they will continue to compete in that category as they get older.
We have Mindi and Vanda who train the younger girls. They are doing an amazing job!!

Just heard from Sandra and there is 1 girl that just entered for fitness last minute. Which is great.
I never meant anything negative for my post... was just wondering in general how we could bring up the numbers.
I do like the jr fitness idea (I believe it was Sandra who offered jr fitness a few years ago at her show!!!) Was so great!!!!
I just love fitness and want to see the numbers come up.
Last year was better... but am thinking maybe more are making the switch to bikini instead??
On a side note --- they have over 173 competitors entered in this weekends show!!!! Which is AMAZING!!! A record number!

I hope it's just an off year for fitness, the division always makes for an entertaining show. Still looking forward to the show anyhow, 173 competitors means I'm going to get my money's worth at the night show.

Wow 173 competitors! Awesome!!
We have one of our biggest shows coming up too at the end of the month - numbers around the same. Probably a handful of fitness girls too.
Maybe the fitness girls out west are scurred :scared: of eventually going against the Ontario fitness girls??? With Mindi and Jodi and Vanda and Danielle down here and all...
:evil5:
hehehehehe
Just kidding :p
Maybe I'll try fitness one day :trophy:

Was looking back on numbers from previous shows in BC and Fitness was always good for numbers... provincials had a huge amount of competitors... so I guess it just flucuates and this was a slow time. Kelowna had lots this year, so maybe girls are chosing to do the shows closer to provincials and nationals (since nationals are here in bc in 2012!!!) Would make sense!

That is sad there are so few fitness competitors. Oh well, I heard it was Sam Mack that entered fitness late and she always has a great routine! And hopefully we will see more at the kelowna and fort st John shows.

I love fitness as well and wish I could compete.
I think the reason why there are so few athletes these days is because of the high level of gymnastics involved. Honestly if you want to do well you have to have years of gymnastics training under your belt. If fitness involved only strength holds and dance there would be more athletes.

I believe Sandra Wickham was self taught in terms of gymnastics - no backgrounf - and she won her pro card!!
Sherry Boudreau too!!!
Lots of girls just need to come out and do dance, strength and not worry about tumbling!

Just heard from Sandra and there is 1 girl that just entered for fitness last minute. Which is great.
Look, I am not going to bash this 1 girl that did enter the fitness at the SWFC last night, but really??!! Should this girl have competed for the sake of being the only girl in fitness. I don't personally know Sam, and I've seen her before in fitness......Lori, don't you think someone should of talked to her about her leaness, or lack of. I know I can't be the only one who is thinking this.

I do know Sam -- she is amazing (inside and out!!!)
She actually suffered a huge tumor that she just had removed a few months ago - I don't know the full details -- BUT BRAVO SAM!!!!!
The fact she is even alive... who gives a crap about the size of her butt or her leanness... she is a champion!!!
I think far too often we focus on the "perfect physiques" and so called "pro cards" that give you what, really?? Does it really matter??
Or does it matter that some of the people get on stage and are THEIR BEST!!!!
It pisses me off when I am in the crowd and here people gasp when a girl turns around and her ass isn't the tightest... what? how do we know where this girl came from -- did she maybe lose 100 lbs!!! and this is HER WIN, her end result!!!! I applaud anyone for having the guts to get up on stage and be judged by a crowd of "know it alls" and judgementment perfectionist!!! who always claim to be able to do better... but aren't on stage themselves!
Sorry --- but I will not bash sam!!! I love her!!! I love all the bodies up there on stage -- cause they GOT UP THERE!!!!
Sam has been a national level fitness competitor --- she has shown some amazing routines on stage - she is a true performer with a love for being her very best!! And if she beat cancer, or that tumor, or whatever her health concerns were --- BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
I think more people would get up there if they weren't so scared to be ripped apart, just like we often see on here.

On a more positive note -- this show was the best show I have been to yet!!!!
Sandra and Ross put on an amazing show!!! 171 athletes --- who all deserved to be up there!!!
the most competitive show I have seen in a long time!!!!!
AMAZING!

Well, like I said, I don't know her, and I already thought it was either this girl lost a ton of weight, and felt this was the right time for her, or of course, some sort of life changing health issue to just get up there and go for it. I figured if I posted my thoughts, I'd end up looking like a jackass, and what do you know, she had cancer-bingo to my instincts! That is a horrible thing to happen to her or anyone-bravo? yes indeed! Good for her.
But............here I go: why decide to put your body on display to be critiqued when clearly you look 180 degrees different from the other 170? After I thought about it, I just felt like it was mocking other athletes who dieted down so hard for last night. I'm sure Sam is just beautiful inside and out, but still....ITS A PHYSIQUE/FITNESS CONTEST. And that point has nothing to do with who she is and what she's been through.

I think people appreciate seeing the effort that these competitors put into their training. It really is an incredible sport. Unfortunately in this case it didn't appear that much effort went into the training or routine. Kudos for her for overcoming obstacles and I've seen her on stage before with super entertaining routines but that unfortunately wasn't one of them. Hope she comes back and rocks the BCs tho!

I totally get what you're saying, but it seemed to me that she was there just to show that she was back in good health and not really looking for a trophy or pro card.

Like I said, Sam has been to nationals - with amazing routines... and she even just comes to stage HOW SHE WANTS... not what the judges want. She has never cared about a pro card... SHE DOES IT FOR FUN (gasp!!!) say what!!!! hee hee
Yes, some people, especially at regional level shows... are checking off bucket lists, having FUN!!!! Most doesn't even know what a pro card is!!!! And GOOD!!!!!! Cause who cares!!
She was not mocking anyone!!!! She was probably just getting up on stage to say I AM ALIVE!!!!! (just assuming things here!)
But at the end of the day..... it is her choice. There were also a few figure, bodybuilding male and female who didn't "look the part"... but none of us question them.... or mock them! I am smile bigger when I see someone GLOWING on stage, not looking half dead from dieting, hearing their children and spouses cheer for them CAUSE THEY ARE THEIR BEST!!! Sure, they may not be 8% bodyfat, but they are there for themselves!!!!
Again, I know Sam would never make a mockery of anyone... she loves fitness, she is a performer as her profession and I am sure after having such a health scare she was just getting up there to BE!!! BE ALIVE!!!! Be healthy and have some fun!!!!
Some people actually prefer fuller figured women over the half dead ribs popping out, face sunken in bikini competitors that I sometimes just wanna feed a pizza to!! No one says anything about them, or snickers when they come out (and trust me, their skinniness is way worse then a big booty and some thighs that Sam showed off last night!)

We all gotta live in this crazy world together --- let's show a little love and respect for one another... or at least allow everyone their own freedom of their expression.
It would be a very boring world if we were all the same size, shape, and beauty!!! VERY BORING!

I do like the jr fitness idea (I believe it was Sandra who offered jr fitness a few years ago at her show!!!) Was so great!!!!
\
I competed in fitness at the Kelowna Westerns this May, it was my first time and I am not a former gymnast, however competed the past 5 years in cheerleading w/ self taught gymnastics. It is way more difficult to execute a good fitness routine as an adult when one doesn't have the gymnastics background. Stage floors are not forgiving on the joints! It's not mandatory to have those tumbling skills but of course, if one is aiming to be competitive on the national level, then its definitely a must.
I love love the idea of having a junior fitness category in BC, I have been giving this a lot of thought actually. It would be another avenue for kids to be active in, like any other sport (ballet, gymnastics, etc). It would certainly help expand Fitness, and give it longevity. I know SO many cheerleaders/acro gymnasts who would do so well in this category.

Bummer to hear about the lack of fitness competitors at the SWFC - there's usually such a good turn out for fitness at Sandra's show.
I wonder if it does have something to do about the timing of the shows next year with BCs then Nationals back to back. Perhaps girls want to just diet the whole way through.
Fitness is tough. It takes all the training of the other classes with an added 1 or more hours per day of routine work. It's a huge time commitment and it can be hard on the body. But it's SO FUN! And SO rewarding.
I've seen a few junior fitness competitors over the years since the SWFC offered it, but it never seemed to really catch on. I'm not sure if it's bigger in other provinces/states or if that's just the nature of junior fitness.
