Amanda was not invited to the Ms Figure International as many of you already know, even though she placed 2nd at last year's Ms Figure International.

She made a statement today over at MD:

Hey everyone, don't know what to say but that I have yet to get a response as to why I was not invited. It's invitational so it's not based on how I did last year or the year before it's based on votes. I think people can come to their own conclusion on why without me saying what I know. I am ok with it now, I have moved forward even though yes it hurts because it was a huge dream of mine taken away.....it is what it is. I think times like this help u learn so much about yourself and how strong of a person u are and have become. My values and beliefs and how I treat others defines me not the stage and I am learning this everyday, I say I have no regrets bc i think they are all lessons in life. I don't want to ever look back and I think I didn't do something bc I was afraid of regret. If this is the case of why I am not going then so be it. I would never change my personal life to please a judge or anybody for that matter you shouldn't have to bc your personal life is just that... not what body u bring to the stage. I have no ill feelings towards the industry, David and I respect the people that choose to compete bc we know the dedication and the determination that goes into competing. It will always be apart of my life!

I have received a lot of messages from fans, they have been very supportive through all of this so thank you from the bottom of my heart, thank you for keeping me motivated. As for me and my relationship I would never turn my back on someone that is going through a tough time no matter what it was. I had to find my priorities in life and they are my family and sticking by those that need me. D is going through a tough time right now it's a fight everyday just to make it. I hear people say he is getting off "easy", if only they could walk in his shoes for one week you would know it's never easy. It all comes down to we all make mistakes in life some are bigger then others but it's a mistake and you have to live with it day in and day out. You take your punishment or for some they never get called out on there mistake and you move forward. It doesn't mean someone is a bad person nor does it define who they are bc in life we grow and with lessons we face we become a different person everyday. I wish all the girls the best of luck the weekend at the Arnold, it was my most memorable show bc it truly epitomizes the industry as a whole with the amount of fans that attend.

For the girls out there getting ready to compete stay focused and driven but don't ever stray far from what you believe in your heart. I was always asked what motivated me, back then I would say the win, the fight, and the things that I had to give up, but now it's my fans the people that can see how you can change your way of life by being healthy. Once you can look in the mirror and be happy with the person you see inside and out you can then be an even better person to those around you (family,friends,loved one)ect....

D and i won't be attending the Arnold this year instead I will be focusing on some other projects I have in the works.

Here is an update of where I sit, as of yesterday. 4 weeks from today I will be waking up in my hotel in OH! I feel amazing and so much better than I did the other day. I felt my body coming down with something, I took the rest of the day off and now feel like a million bucks. One thing I have learned over the past seasons is to Listen to you body!!! OUr minds tend to get in the way sometimes but it is so important to listen to what our body is telling us. Instead of being out more than one day, a took of 1/2 my cardio for one day and now am back on track!!

Prep is going well and I am getting excited. I am starting to get really tired but that is to be expected this close.

It's been a while, but we figured it was time to start showing the women a little love - not that kind of love - by beginning to run more training articles featuring your favorite fitness and figure pros. First up, fast-rising Gina Aliotti. When we shot Gina on Sunday, February 16, she was two days under two weeks out from the Figure International on Friday, February 29.


Now entering her third year as a pro, the 23-year-old Aliotti has been on a tear recently, as evidenced by her runner-up finish at the 2007 Olympia. The Olympia placing came just weeks after her win at the Tournament of Champions Pro Figure, which was the third pro win of her young career. Aliotti finished sixth at the 2007 Figure International, and is one of the early favorites to take home the title next weekend.

Just 8 days out from the Arnold Classic.. you ask, Am I Ready? Well, there is never a tougher time to diet but through Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and Dave's Birthday. So, I was faced with the dieting challenges. And.. I will say it as I always say it... DIET IS EVERYTHING. So, I am playing catch up right now.. and we will see what I am able to do these last few days. I am the heaviest I have ever been less than 2 weeks from a show.... so, let's hope this years off season has made an impact in my physique. We shall see.

My suits are on point... the routine is DONE, and I have everything set to go.

I have 3 shots on Saturday morning... 1 that is interesting, shooting for a FEMALE BB Book that will be published later this year. I am totally wearing my night suit for that shoot.. that is how much I love my suit.

I am also looking forward to a SPECIES SHOOT with Me and Kristy...Dan Ray is going to shoot that on Sunday. I think that should be fun.

I am planning on making to the expo around 2 p.m. on Saturday... so, look for me there. You know that is always a good time.

Wish me luck.... who knows what will happen. I just hope I place better than last year.

Predictions Redux—Reflections on Going Out on a Limb

Lmao ever since I made my “predictions” for the upcoming Arnold Sports Festival women’s pro bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions in Columbus, Ohio, on “Living Beautiful Radio” (see the February 7 entry). It could be my imagination, but I seem to have had more than the usual “Ruthie-I-love-you-but…” phone and e-mail messages in the days after we did the Webcast. Since the contests are still a week away, I thought I’d share a couple of the how-it’s-going-to-go-downs that have come from, shall we say, industry insiders who have their sources. Then, if they come to pass, you’ll know you read it here first.

Fitness. This one was actually mentioned by co-host Nancy Di Nino during the interview (catch the replay at www.LivingBeautifulRadio.com (http://www.livingbeautifulradio.com/)), but I didn’t get to follow up with her. I suggested that Kim Klein would repeat as Fitness International champ; Nancy said that “everyone” was saying that it was Jen Hendershott’s show. Now, if you’re handicapping that lineup, you’re either going pick Hendershott, the ’05 champ, who was second last year and third at the Olympia, or you’re going to pick Klein, who though she wasn’t at her best at the O, still came in second—ahead of Jen. Either woman would be a reasonable “prediction,” but I can’t think why anyone would assume it was Jen’s show. Hmmm.… Maybe they know something.

Women’s bodybuilding. After hearing my comments that Dayana Cadeau would not take Iris Kyle at the Ms. International—and, in fact, that Dayana would be third—I got a call from a friend who likes to get into it with me about these matters. Folks my friend was talking to, including perhaps a couple of judges, had more than suggested that Cadeau had pushed multi-time Ms. Olympia Kyle harder than the score sheets suggested at the O—and that they were ready for a change. “Cadeau will beat Iris at the Arnold,” my friend said with authority. My reply? “It could happen. Nobody’s right all the time.” Then I got another call from my friend.

Figure. Now, pay attention, ’cause I’m not going to name names here. My friend wanted to tell me that a certain figure gal was certain to be moving into the top five. Since this is someone everyone thinks should be in the top five, I couldn’t see where the fire was. My friend then mentioned that the athlete was reportedly now working with a certain (trainer/management company/supplement company)—supposedly the reason for her ascent. My reply? “Is she also going to be bringing down those shoulders?”

Chuckling, I thanked my friend for the gossip and said I’d stand by all my predictions. (It could happen.) It’s all in fun, and I’ve never won the Oscar pool either. As a reporter and columnist I’ll be just as delighted if Hendershott wins the Fitness I, Cadeau finally overtakes Kyle and/or our mystery gal breaks into the top five at the Figure I as I’d be if my predictions came true. They’re all wonderful athletes, and, frankly, it’s a good story either way, eh?

The men's show is all the buzz with the champ being out and the emergence of Phil Heath, but there are three other competitions going on that tend to not get the same buzz. I'm here to breakdown the women's side of things and handicap how I see the shows shaking out.

The women will take the stage on Friday at the Arnold Expo and follow it up with the night show later that night. There are a few familiar names missing from the shows which will make things interesting on the women's side of things.

Fans will be treated to a new champ in Figure without a doubt, but will there be new champs in the women's bodybuilding and fitness? We'll find out this Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

I have been beyond exhausted lately but wanted to make a quick post so everyone knows I'm still alive and kicking. The last couple of weeks have hit me pretty hard but that's expected when your bodyfat gets extremely low. So, needless to say, I will be ready :) I just have to hang in there these last few days--only 5 more hrs of cardio! I fly to Columbus on Wednesday and am still not sure how I'm going to get everything done. I need to do some shopping and get my hair done--yikes! It has been in a permanent bun for the past 3-4 months.

Just curious as to what training injury Iris obtained during her preparation for the Ms. International? This is news to me since I not only train with her day to day, but live with her also. Rumors are just that, RUMORS!

Expect more of the same from 3 time Ms. International, Iris Kyle. Everyone is entitled to their opinions(Big J1), but don't expect Iris to be out shape, EVER!!!!

Do you have any predictions at all for figure at the Arnold?

I think that it will really come down to Jennifer (Gates) and Gina (Aliotti) …. Sonia is beautiful and she has most of the components but probably not quite the full package to win the title. I think Jennifer will win because if you think about it she more closely resembles the past winners, so you have to look at the past. Plus if Gina wins it will be even tougher to justify not inviting me because we have similar bodies. So I would say my predicted top five would be Jenn, Gina, Sonia, Nicole Wilkins and Laticia Wilder.

I am leaving shortly for Columbus. I can't believe the show is already here. It has been a tough few months, but I have trained hard and dieted perfectly. I am ready for this show. I have a long flight ahead of me and plan to get there early to rest and prepare myself better for the show. While I was practicing my routine, I hurt my legs. I am still in a lot of pain. I pray it all goes away. I can't wait to get there and put my tan on because then I will know its coming. I will feel like I am at the end of my journey. Prejudging, I will be wearing a black suit and for the night show, I will be in turquoise.

I will be in the Gaspari Nutrition booth all weekend so if you are near, please stop by and say hello. I will have my new photos, my signature straps, and my new T-shirt!! Yes...it is all done and will be available. So come out and support TEAM POWER CAT! JULIE LOHRE: My prep for the Arnold is going very well and I am really excited to be closing out a long, hard 10 weeks. I have worked harder than ever for this show and really feel that it shows in my physique. 2007 was a pivotal year for me and through my experiences and training last year, I have come into my own in terms of what I want to look like and how I want to present myself. I know where I have been in the past in terms of my conditioning and presentation because I have been keeping careful records throughout my pro career. After much analysis and contemplation, I know what direction I want to go in now too. While what the judges think is very important to me, what you will see from me at the International is what I feel fitness should be all about. It is liberating to work so hard and to know at the end of the show that I will have accomplished what I set out to do AND have no regrets about how I got there.

[ Q ] When I saw you two weeks out at the Iron Man you looked more streamlined with your physique. Would you agree you'll be bringing a better package to the Arnold stage than the Olympia and West Palm Beach shows?


[ A: ] I definitely agree. I have definitely mainstreamed my physique by bringing down the size in my legs, thanks to the treadmill! My upper body is now definitely bigger than my lower body, which is the main goal that I have been trying to achieve since the day I started competing.
I have always had over powering legs and now I think I have the perfect balance of upper to lower body without having my lower body over power my upper. I am excited to see how this physique looks on stage!

I was just on another board reading the play by play for the Pro ladies.

I really think that is why the ladies are getting confused! In Figure/Fitness, NPC and IFBB are wanting to making a significant difference between this and BB'ing. In helping to make it clear...they do not want to use terms that are associated with BB'ing.

For ex: physique, hard, dry, muscles, ripped etc...

I think it sends the wrong message to the girls thinking....Oh, I need to be ripped? Or, I need to be hard?

Instead, we need to be using words like...body, well balanced, nice shape, tight ......

That is what I have observed.

I am so happy to see Chastity getting better... but wondering... Amy Fry got so good call outs (Ok, judging only in pics...). I do know she has her own fans and actually her name was in many top 5 lists before the show, but somehow I am not fan of her physique. But that is only my opinion :)

I'll go deeper later, but here are my initial thoughts:

Ms. International Top Six: I didn't get around to posting my prediction for the Ms. International, but I did have Yaxeni as a long shot due to the Iris/Dayana rivalry that's been going on for a while now. Didn't see that coming. But Iris didn't make the top six?!?! Can't wait to hear about this one over the weekend. Congrats to Yaxeni.

Fitness International: I said that Kim wasn't gonna let go of that title just yet, and I was right. Julie Palmer all the way up to third was a long time coming for her after being in sixth for so long. I think if you want to go to the top of the Arnold placings, you need to have your name start with Julie (Palmer: constant top-six placer, Lohre: fourth place this year, Shipley-Childs: fifth in 2006) LOL. :p I called it, baby!

Figure International: I can honestly say never in my life am I proud to be a fan of figure, with the future of the sport taking the top two positions: runner-up Jennifer Gates and new champion Gina Aliotti. Both women have beauty you can't describe. I said I would be happy is either of them took the title, and I am. Congrats to you both, and we'll see you at the Olympia!!! :awesome:

Congrats to everyone that made the top six in each category. Which of them will translate their Arnold showings into Olympia showstealers and give Iris Kyle, Adela Garcia, and Jenny Lynn a run for their money come September? Yaxeni Oriquen made history on Friday night, becomming the first competitor in the 20 year-history of the event to win four Ms. International titles. Perhaps equally noteworthy was the fact that the most dominant competitor in female bodybuilding over the past five years, three-time Ms. Olympia and three-time Arnold Classic champ Iris Kyle, was left out of the top six of this year's iteration of the annual Columbus musclefest.

Now four-time winner Yaxeni Oriquen brought a slimmer, more refined physique to bear as she collected the $25,000 first place prize, edging out Dayana Cadeau. Third place went to 50-year-old Lisa Aukland, fourth to 52-year-old Betty Pariso, fifth to Brenda Raganot and sixth to a hyper-striated Cathy Lefrancois.

Aside from Yaxeni's impressive win, the story of the night was clearly the judges' decision to leave Kyle, who was is good form, out of the finalist's row.

Clearly, they were as distracted as the audience by the panoply of abscesses on her corpus. Two large knobs adorned her glutes and another on her shoulder. So obtrusive were they that it became difficult to assess her physique, particularly in rear poses.

In fitness Kim Klein set herself up as the de facto favorite for this year's Olympia, with a spirited performance that was strong from start to finish. A very popular Jen Hendershott (she received the evening's biggest ovation) took second, despite a pair of balloon boobs and Hooter's outfit.

The rest of the top six in order were; 3rd- Julie Palmer, 4th- Julie Lohre, 5th- Tracey Greenwood and 6th- Regiane Da Silva.

In figure San Diego's Gina Aliotti continued her rise up the ranks with an Figure International win - the fourth of her career - and a cool $16k to go with it. Young, pretty and ambitious, Aliotti is a solid poster girl for her sport and is rapidly moving up the ranks. Aliotti placed sixth at last year's Figure International before going on a tear that saw her win the Tournament of Champions Pro Figure and place second at the Olympia in a two-week span to close out the 2007 season. Second place went to Jennifer Gates, third to 5'9" Amy Fry, fourth to Chastity Sloan, fifth to Sonia Adcock. Paola Almerico rounded out the top six.

Could be a number of reasons.

I went back and looked at her National pictures. She doesn't have deep abdominals to begin with.

But it could've been several factors. What she carb'ed up with. If she even carb'ed up...since she works with Dave.P I think he fat loads right? I'm not completely sure.

Her quads may genetically just be that way. She has phenomenal quads!!!

my take on Kristy....yes her midsection was flat. and her legs where shredded. but porportionaltly to the rest of her body her quads are undersized. if you look at the top five, for their bodies, they all have much broader and thicker quads.

Kristy has a freaky big upper body. her glutes are alright, hammy's look good, calves are acceptable, but her quads could use a lil more beef.

I finally returned Monday night after a very long trip to Columbus, OH where I made my less than stellar pro debut at the Ms. International (Arnold Classic). I actually didn't realize how "off" I was until I came back and looked at pics. My conditioning was there but I think some of the things we tried the last few days caused me to smooth out a bit--and unfortunately, I have the type of physique that has to be dead on or else I look completely off. The diet adjustments were conservative but I think complicated by the fact that I had basically done 2 consecutive preps with the shows ~16 weeks apart and was just run down and tired. Oh well, live and learn. At least I had the opportunity to compete at such a major show and got my pro debut under my belt. I think I would have been in the last callout regardless at that level so no harm done. I did feel like I earned the respect of the other competitors which means a great deal to me. I was just in awe of the women I was standing on stage with--they are all tremendous athletes and wonderful people.

I want to thank Dave Palumbo and Species Nutrition for sponsoring me and Maggie Blanchard for making my suits--they were gorgeous and fit perfectly! I also have to thank my boyfriend Branden who stood by me through this prep and a very emotional weekend. Now we can focus on getting him ready for the USA's and then hopefully be competing together at the 2009 NY Pro.

Prejudging for the show began at noon on Friday on the Expo stage. I wore my black suit for the prejudging. I did my mandatory poses and felt good all the way through. I then went over to the Gaspari booth and got up on the table and did some impromptu posing for the crowd. There were so many people that came to see me. The crowd was huge!

For the night show, I wore my turquoise suit. I stepped on stage and the crowd was so welcoming of me. My routine was great. When I found I was picked for the top 6 posedown I was so happy. I stood on stage and waited for the placings to be announced. I was sure I did well here. I did it all right this time and felt great. Then they annouced me in 6th place. My heart just dropped. I worked so hard for so long and all for the money. When I heard 6th place, I said OH NO, MY BONUS!!...which I only get if place top 5 or higher. The crowd booed and people screamed, you are the real winner Cathy! That made me feel good, but I couldn't help but think of all I lost at that point. It costs lost of money to prepare for a show like this, so not placing well means I am paying for everything myself. I will keep my head up and move on to my next show. I plan to come back even better than I was. I am on the right track now and have the people in place that I need to be number one.

I'll try and look at pics and give you my opinion.

Last year when she competed her in Denver at the Colorado Pro/Am, I asked the IFBB judges why she didn't place well. They all told me she is too muscular and comes in too hard for Figure.

so after studying the pics for a few weeks for figure, i think paola has the physique that the judges say they want to see. i think she looks great! she is very "streamlined", not too muscular, not too hard, not too soft, very symmetrical and balanced! i don't think she gets much mention because nothing on her stands out because she is so symmetrical. i think her physique is the direction figure may go, according to everything that is being said out there right now. i think her body is beautiful, but some may disagree with me because she is not super muscular....what do you guys think? i think she should have placed higher!

I think Paola will be top 3 at many pro shows this season. Remember, she only turned pro last year. She's still a newbie in the pro ranks, but quickly on the rise.
