From the OPA's website:

www.physiqueassociation.ca

The Ontario Physique Association is Ontario's governing body for bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini events. The OPA is the only organization in Ontario recognized nationally by the CBBF and internationally by the IFBB.

Every year, the OPA holds approximately 15 events throughout Ontario, making us the largest physique organization in the country both in terms of the number of competitions we hold and competitors that enter. OPA events also receive tremendous media exposure in all the country's leading physique magazine and across numerous websites and online resources. If a highly competitive environment that offers tremendous potential for growth appeals to you, then the OPA is right to you.

It depends, the biggest/most competitive shows typically are Stratford, Mississauga, London. The natural shows are getting bigger too, but typically are smaller than the non tested shows.

The Ontarios is usually a HUGE show.... I think 300 athletes this year?? Trust me... waiting back stage for finals... finals started at like 4... and bikini was midway thru I was on stage at like 8?? it was crazy.

bodybuilding is ALIVE AND THRIVING here!! WOO! :awesome:

Hey Lauren,

I train at Goodlife too (downtown)! I also train sometimes at the YMCA. I have never competed but hope to soon. I like to go to shows and see the competitions and I went to Stratford one spring to watch and just network too! I used to work for Muscle Sports Web, an online bodybuilding website but it's not around anymore.

I'll definitely come up and introduce myself. Funny, I live close to Centennial Hall too (Barton and Talbot). Crazy!

Have fun next week at Nationals!!!!

Awesome! :awesome: my friend Kerri is on the poster for that show!

The posing seminar Melissa did was just for the KW show, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the seminars popping up! They're a great idea!!

The best person to ask re: any OPA sanctioned events is Lori Ann Redding...

You're in Guelph right?

Thank you so much! You are incredible! I am even more excited now!!!

I am doing the UFE Spring Bash, to get my jitters out of the way before OPA at the end of April.... Beyond that I am trying not to get my hopes up and think too much about it...(Who am I kidding... I think about it all the time!! My biggest problem is focusing on now instead of a year or more down the road!)!!! I am just dying to get on stage!! A good friend of mine (and my boss!!) has competed in the past, just never with OPA... She even said posing will be the hardest part for me... I am far from graceful!!! I want to start practicing as much as possible asap so it comes natural by April!

Thank you again!!!!

Girl change that attitude, put EVERYTHING into it and give it you're all. You wont be dissapointed I promise... :)

UFE is completely different than OPA... and the "look" of their category is completely is totally different also - ie bikini model in UFE is NOT the same as the bikini division in the OPA... kwim??

That being said, I can definitely help you with OPA's required posing for both bikini and figure, as I've done both :) :D

Is the April UFE show in London?? If so I'll go cheer ya on :D

As for the April OPA show you do, the end of month one is in Ottawa no?

I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY, recommend doing the Stratford show. I did that earlier this year and it was the best show I have ever been in! So well organized, run and so much fun. Great venue and Stratford is nice and close, cute little town!! :awesome:

Thanks again!!! The UFE is just for fun... To get on stage with some friends that are also doing it!! OPA is where I want to really put my energy and time!

You may take back the offer to help when you see how ungraceful I am!!! It is pretty pathetic! What got you to pick bikini over figure?! I'd love to hear your take on the 2! I honestly can't thank you enough for helping me out!!! You are so thoughtful!

Isn't the Stratford one "open"?? I was originally planning on competing in the Ottawa, natural, one.... I figured I wouldn't stand a chance on the open stage!!!

I haven't really picked figure over bikini to be honest... I like them both!! I am caught in the middle - I believe my personality is bikini but my physique could be more on the figure side. I have placed top 3 in both divisions, also not making my decision any easier haha.
I think I will see how I look after dieting down next year.
With bikini I love the posing and the personality you can display on stage. With figure I love the nice capped shoulders and the leaner look. I love em both but I look up to/am motivated more by figure pros to be honest. I like being strong and I actually like the harder look :)

And Stratford is open - all shows are open - I think you mean "non tested" right?
Well I am 100% natural and I have placed 2nd, 3rd and 5th in non tested shows. Don't let that deter you. The best advice I can give you is bring the best you and try out both types of shows :) I was supposed to do the ontario naturals too this year until I badly sprained my ankle.. :(

Anyway... Im sure you are not as bad you as say :) I've worked with a few real stiff girls and they are fine now. Posing came pretty naturally to me so I'm happy to help whenever I can :)

Good for you placing top 3 in both!!!! I'm excited to see what next year brings you! Sorry to hear about your ankle!

I really appreciate all your help and advice. I am so happy I met you! I have learned so much from you... I felt kinda left out in the cold with a coach I used to have... Many pros (bikini and figure) are 100%... and went to non tested shows and rocked them!! IMO the look for both divisions is rewarding the natural girls now anyways --- so I'd say not to worry about tested or not.... not really an issue (for bodybuilders maybe).

Vancouver is amazing!!! been here 9 years - but all of my family is back in stratford!!! I love Ontario though!! miss the sunshine!!!

You are in good hands with advice from Lauren - and I agree about hiring a coach like Mindi - she is amazing (and could really guide you from start to finish, and also help you to chose which category you fit into best.)

Thanks Crystol!!

But you are right, having someone close to home is nice (that is my favorite part of training people for comps, meeting for the weekly posing in person and bootcamps for fun together) -- so much better then the bad lighting, out of focus pics people send from afar. And there are some great coaches in ontario too.

We gotta get together and meet in person finally!!! (hoping at one of Scott's weekends, if he schedules one!! hopin!):respect:

"Put Your Money Where Your Muscles Are

Written by: Sonny César

After competing in various bodybuilding shows and being crowned Mr. Ottawa in 2005, provincial champion in 2005, national champion in 2007 and after having represented Canada at the 2007 IFBB World Men's Bodybuilding Championships, I’ve somewhat taking a break from the bodybuilding scene to concentrate on other aspects of my life. However, I’m still in contact with athletes and still navigate all local, provincial, national and international organizations’ Web sites to keep up-to-date with the latest results on bodybuilding stages. Seeing fellow competitors climb up the latter and overcome all challenges that the industry brings to a bodybuilder’s plate is an incentive for me to keep pushing in the weight room and oil up for an upcoming standoff. The troubles and the confusion within the bodybuilding “world” made me sit and write my thoughts.

I remember being excited about stepping on stage to perform the seven mandatory poses in front of an avid bodybuilding crowed. I remember having met a handful of joyful individuals with one dream in common, to win it all and make a mark as an ambassador of the sport. I remember the talks about diets, workout plans, posing, skin dye and the “tricks of the trade” while standing backstage waiting for the category that I competed in to be called on the battle field. I remember…the good times I had! That is what kept me going and that is what is going to make me come back and give my all to the sport once again. Politics, rivalry (within organizations) and misunderstanding of what the sport stands for, got me thinking twice about getting back to the gym to pump it up and show off what I worked so hard at for hours on end.

A lot of opportunities were given to new organizations to establish themselves along side other reputable organizations that have been putting up shows together since Arnold decided to make Pumping Iron his number one hobby. At the end of the day, the more organizations promote the sport, the more people hear about it and the more coverage the sport gets. Bodybuilding is more than a sport, it’s a lifestyle. Everyday, one will eat, drink, sleep, work, push and pan out a plan to balance the time needed to get in shape for a successful outcome at a show and the time for personal endeavors. For me, more promotion behind shows simply means that the life of a bodybuilder will no longer be looked at as a narcissist fanatic looking to justify the love of a perfect physique by flexing alongside others alike. The public gets an understanding of what motivates men and women to go through this grueling process and the individuals that are reticent about bodybuilding get a better idea of what it is. The lifestyle is a healthy one and it demands a certain level of discipline to be part of it.

That being said, there are many bodybuilding organizations looking to step up to the plate and take the task under their wing to promote and put bodybuilding on the map. These organizations are competing against each other to make ends meet. Only in Ontario, I’ve heard of half of dozen bodybuilding organizations sharing the market and trying to step on one another to glorify their position compared to others that are striving to do the same. You hear form one organization swearing they have the best drug control program. From another, you hear they have the best venues. And more, you hear from some that their staffs are more experienced to provide feedback after a judging session. All of that makes me wonder what happened to the good old saying l’union fait la force (French for: unity makes us stronger). It is not by giving out pro cards like hot cakes or by advertising that drugs will never be part of the line-up or by selling the idea that the best caliber of competitors are seeing at a particular show under the umbrella of one particular organization that the bodybuilding business will become profitable for one group. I think that it’s more by combining efforts, by negotiating and by allowing a respectful forum of discussions to take place on the aspects of local, provincial, national and international bodybuilding that all organizations will end up on top. The Ontario Physique Association (OPA) which is affiliated to the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) which is then affiliated to the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) has proven the validity of my theory. With their constant collaboration, they have been providing the best shows that bodybuilding has seen on the scene.

If you’re looking to attend a show or to be part of the growing interest to clean up your diet, upgrade your workout plan and compete, I’m certain that you can find a perfect bodybuilding contest to meet your expectations. By browsing the internet, you can connect with your local representatives that can provide you with additional information on registration procedures and competition rules and regulations. My opinion is that there is no better organization to be a part of if you’re looking to meet and greet with the best in the bodybuilding industry than to find out where the next OPA, CBBF or IFBB show will take place. Put your money where your muscles are and sign up for an event that not only will provide you with an exclusive lifestyle but also with a chance to stand beside what is considered the “cream of the crop” of bodybuilding. Mike Platz, Ben Pakulski, Henderson Thorne, Fouad Abiad, Mindi O’Brien and Johanna Dejager, just to name a few, have all started their careers at a show related to the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) and ended up on an International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) stage to be compared with the best athletes this planet has to offer.

I believe that all organizations striving to put together a show by promoting the benefits of conditioning the physical aspect of humans is doing a remarkable job. By attracting youth, men, women and seniors to take part in developing habits to achieve their highest levels of fitness, organizations contribute to the awareness of healthy living among communities. Whether it is in a figure competition, a fitness competition, a bikini competition or a bodybuilding competition, you can reinvent yourself and overcome any obstacles to get to your prize. Be a part of this wonderful journey and make the right choice in adding your name to the right list of competitors in any given organization. As for me, I’m waiting for the day when the right time arises to enroll into an OPA show where I could defend my crown and follow up with a CBBF show to end up overseas at an IFBB show at the top of my shape battling for the most prestigious title in bodybuilding. After all, to be the best, you have to beat the best!

WOW that is a lot of shows! I am competing in my first one in may in Kelowna BC. But I am still waiting for my membership to come in the mail. 6-8 processing. I understand the organization is volunteer run but it takes weeks for the BCABBA to get to emails, and I have even had some emails never replied to. Definitely not cool when you need to grow an organization. I sent an email offering to volunteer at shows or what not and never got a reply, and they say they really need volunteers.
Do I need to join the Ontario organization to compete there or does having a membership from any province cover besides the entry fees and such?

I believe you will have to have a membership through the OPA to compete here.

Avril - could you confirm this? :)
