Hey smart people!! Does anyone remember the headlines about a female teenaged athelete who's death was contributed to using bengay. I remember her mother saying that she ran cross country and was having a hard time recovering from her meets. I also remember a doctor saying something about there being a high level of whatever chemical is in these rubbing cremes in her system.

Does anyone know if her death was solely based on using too much cream for too many days or did she have a pre-existing issue. I also think her mother said she was taking Ibuprofen.

I just want some information b/c the cardio is taking it's toll on my already injured hamstring and today both my glutes started aching. I just don't want 2 overdose on the stuff!!! I'm using it mid afternoon and in the evenings before I go to bed.

Methyl salicylate (salicylic acid) is what that runner OD'ed on. It's the active in most OTC topical pain relievers (Tiger Balm, Icy Hot, etc). She was using Bengay as well as methyl salicylate adhesive pads and some other product.

'An anti-clotting agent, salicyclic acid at very high doses "can cause internal bleeding, it can cause arrhythmias of the heart, it can cause problems in the liver -- there are any number of ways it can get to you.' - Dr. Gerard Varlotta, the director of sport rehabilitation at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York City.

So long as you're following the label recommendations, I don't see how this could happen.

There is also something called Olba oil and it seems to work well :)

My roomy is a massage therapist so she had it, and when I had (what felt like a pulled quad) I used that a couple days and it worked a ton!

Yea that story sounds like a freak accident. It was really sad. I got worried too cuz I use Bengay a lot!! But I also use (and this is going to sound weird) bengay for horses! I get it at a tractor supply store and it smells so good. Not medicinal smelling at all and it is very very very strong! i totally recommend it!

Strained hams and calves are tough to get over especially if you are doing a fair ammount of cardio. If you take a spoonful of DMSO (any farm store has this) and crush 2 ibuprofen mixing it together. Then apply it to the strain. Make sure the area is clean because the DMSO is a strong transdermal and anything mixed with it will soak through your skin.

The only ill effect is that your body excrete a garlic smell it you use it often.
DMSO is actually banned by the NFL because you can put it on a partially torn or severly enflamed muscle and you feel 100% and risk injuring it further.

Have they also banned Novocaine.Lidocaine,Xylocaine and all the other caine painkiller injections too? If they have now, it wasn't the case in the 80's and 90's. In fact it was openly used and considered a badge of honor to take shots and then continue playing despite the injury. Considered a courageous act back then.
